Should I apply for this job?

Hiya, WWYD in this situation? I currently work for the NHS (I'm a GP) and it's awful. I feel sick at the thought of going in, there's no end to the work and I just feel we cannot provide a good enough service anymore.
I've seen a job advertised which is medical but not as a GP- basically working in a specialist hospital supporting a consultant with their outpatient clinics. It's in an area I'm really interested in.
However, the pay isn't quite as good and the commute is much further (50 mins compared to 10 mins) I'm also concerned that it's probably just as pressurised there and clinics won't be 4hrs long as advertised. It's a 2 session job but they are on separate days so the commute would be twice weekly for the equivalent of one day's work.
And I feel guilty for leaving GP when it's struggling so much and my practice have been trying to recruit for months with no applications....
Given all this, what would you do? Thanks.

Well, in your situation I would apply for the job and see what happens. If you get an interview, go with an open mind, be very rigorous in your questioning about the set-up there so that you can make a comparison with your current role. It may prove just the change you want, or it may turn out to be not right for you at all....you won't know if you don't apply. Good luck whatever you do.

Thank you! I don't want to go out of the frying pan and into the fire but the thought of carrying on as I am currently is crap.
I would love to be able to enjoy work again. I don't mean skipping about all relaxed but even how GP was 10 years ago would be a start.
I wonder if other people enjoy work or this dread is universal....

50min commute is another 80mins (50-10)×2 on to your day plus the additional stress if you are held up by traffic, or other delays. Plus the additional cost of travelling.

Personally I wouldn't but I'd keep looking for something else or another practice.

It sounds like you really want to apply for the position regardless of terms, ie longer commute etc. I would say apply and if you get an interview and it isn't for you, you haven't lost anything. On the other hand it could be the ideal move. Good luck 🙂

I really do want to apply but when you figure out that commute in hours wasted per week, it's a big time drain. I suppose nothing lost submitting an application.

Did you apply for the job in the end? Just being curious lol 😆

ThirstyMeeples · 01/02/2023 12:33

I didnt! Thanks for checking. I decided that I have a good work life balance and its taken me a long time to get here and it was what I wanted for years so I'd be daft to throw it away.

Sorry-when I say good work life balance I suppose I mean short commute and all done in the days I work rather than split over more days. And the last couple of weeks haven't been as awful for some reason so I'm not quite as desperate as I was then.

I wouldn't do it. I think trust your instincts re the pressure likely being the same. An extra 40 mins commute for less pay isn't worth it just for a change.

Maybe it'd be good for you mentally to apply but not accept though, get you in the psyche of looking for a new job. A better one will come along soon!

Oh sorry just saw this was an old thread! Good choice OP! you'll find a good one soon!
