Do you think Miss Marple and Hercule Poirot would have got on if they'd met?

I think Miss Marple would've liked Hercule, but I think it would've depended on what mood Hercule was in whether or not he liked her. He was generally very courteous, but did have his irascible moments.

They were discussing this on radio 4 the other day. Apparently Agatha Christie never wanted them to meet because she was worried that Poirot might underestimate/patronise Marple (as many male characters did!)

BringMeTea · 02/01/2023 21:33

I think they both had good manners and would rub along well at a dinner party.

NeverDropYourMooncup · 02/01/2023 21:36

He'd be incredibly charming and polite to her, but not realise when he began his drawing room dénouement that she'd be sitting in the corner quietly knitting until she said 'Oh, yes, dear Monsieur Poirot, we did think that Major Tosser was involved as you say, but that's why I asked Mary Bogginton-Trotter-Smyke if she could contact her sister's nephew's cousin's son to drop by and he arrested the real conspirators at the cricket club just before the fish course'.

EarringsandLipstick · 02/01/2023 21:38

No.

I don't like Poirot anyway - far too grandiose & conceited.

She would have recognised his abilities but had no time for his affectations.

He would have been OTT charming & mannerly to her but she wouldn't have especially liked it.

And he would definitely have under-estimated her.

I do beg your pardon

I fail to see anything amusing about it

Giggorata · 02/01/2023 21:53

She would have got his number all right, as he would have reminded her of Caspar Etherington in the village, a brilliant man who liked things just so, and who never married.
I agree, he would totally underestimate her and be patronising and exaggeratedly gentlemanly - until she astonished him with her insights, whereupon he would be a little more real with her, as an equal.

Motelschmotel · 02/01/2023 21:55

I think they would have respected each other's abilities, but privately disliked the other. Miss marple would have sniffed, hoiked her bosom and gone back to knitting with a "yes, well...". Point would have just shuffled off, looking confused and irritated to have been outshone (massive ego, him).

Clawdy · 02/01/2023 22:07

Miss Marple would be conferring with Mr Satterthwaite and Parker Pyne, convinced she was right, then Poirot would announce "And now, mes amis......." and tell them just where they went wrong! 😆

Zosime · 02/01/2023 22:10

Miss Marple would never have done anything so unladylike.

She would always have been courteous, whatever her private opinion.

Sweetmotherofallthatisholyabov · 02/01/2023 22:14

He'd have adored her. He'd have been polite and enquiring upon meeting her. He'd have copped her intelligence straight away. But they'd have murdered each other if they had to be houseguests of each other.

NancyJoan · 02/01/2023 22:19

He would be suspicious of her food, snobby about her chintzy cottage, contemptuous of her love of gossip.

She would find him prissy, uptight and unsuited to village society, always complaining about the weather and the damage it causes his wardrobe.

Believers · 02/01/2023 22:22

He definitely had a huge ego but nevertheless was a nice man. He was always polite to the servants and waitresses which, as we know, tells us a lot about who you really are!

He was also into psychology and, although Miss Marple didn't mention psychology in so many words (I don't think), she was a fantastic judge of human nature. And usually could illustrate that she knew the vicar was the murderer because she once had a maid who reminded her of him.

So perhaps they would've got on - they'd have had endless conversations about mankind!

I think I love you!

frogswimming · 02/01/2023 22:37

I thought you'd said 'got off' and was picturing them having a big snog.

Mafelicent · 03/01/2023 09:23

@Believers its available on BBC sounds: "books and authors, Agatha Christie at Christmas" 👍🏻

Yes definitely - I think they were both savvy enough to recognise each other's strengths and would have enjoyed bouncing ideas and theories off one another 🙂

MissMarplesGoddaughter · 03/01/2023 18:51

I think they would have enjoyed discussing the different murders they had solved.
