Would you be worried about salmonella

I bought a roast in the bag chicken. I took it out of the fridge while the oven was preheating and then realised the worktop was a bit wet. There was a tiny bit of liquid escaping from the bag. I'm so worried now as after handling it I touched a banana and gave it to my baby to eat. I'm pretty sure I washed my hands inbetween but I'm now paranoid I didn't wash them thoroughly enough and there was chicken juice on it or something.

I'm also worried I've fed him something that was in the same shopping bag and might have been contaminated. I'm frantically cleaning the fridge and everything else that might have been in contact with it and my anxiety is on overdrive.

I dont even know if the cleaner which kills 99.9% of bacteria would include killing salmonella?

I started googling and scared myself so much, so thought I'd come here for a sanity check before I go down this rabbit hole.

I'm not even sure about eating the chicken as if liquid could escape then air might have gotten into it and spoilt it ?

Do you have anxiety OP? This is a huge overreaction to what was very likely condensation from the air meeting the cold of the chicken bag that had been in the fridge. UK chickens are vaccinated against salmonella so the risk of that is low. Please stop worrying. The chicken will be fine to eat once cooked.

Sorry I missed the line about your anxiety.

Thank you, it was definitely juice from inside the bag though :( I turned it in every direction and eventually some juice did come out so I sort of identified the leak. It must have been a tiny hole though as there was a lot of liquid in the bag (as it is marinaded in something) and it didn't come out in any great big drops, I had to shake it for some to come out. (And a micro drop then landed on my face in the process which is only making more anxious). Sigh.

It will be in all probability fine. Like 99.999999%fine
The chicken will be fine to eat because you’ve cooked it.
The work surface and fridge will be fine because you cleaned them.
The banana will be fine because you peeled it.
The chicken probably doesn’t even have salmonella in the first place.
Most salmonella is caught by people with compromised immune systems and those who eat raw chicken or from somewhere with bad food hygiene standards, eg handle raw chicken then plate up cooked stuff.

Just stick whatever cloth/sponge in the dishwasher on the hot cycle and wash the kitchen hand towel.

When I get worried about something I try to break it down into logical steps.

What @Orangesare said. Toddlers eat all sorts off floors & survive unscathed so don't over think it all

belowfrozen · 02/01/2023 18:02

And you cooked the chicken which means no bacteria would survive

I would feel exactly the same as you and my anxiety would be out of control.

Try to think like this. Chicken is not guaranteed to have salmonella. Even if yours did, it may not of ended up on the banana. Even if it did, it probably only went on the skin. Even if your baby did eat it- she may be unwell but she will be fine.
