Milk Tray - horrible taste

OffToThatPlace · 02/01/2023 16:25

Been looking forward to opening a box of Milk Tray I was given by DM at Christmas.

I know Cadburys is nowhere near as good as it used to be - but these are AWFUL. They taste like the smell of burning rubber. Very chemical and bitter.

Well within expiry date but they have gone in the bin after only 3 chocolates.

Looking at recent reviews it appears that this horrible taste is now a thing with Milk Tray.

What a shame. Will open the Ferrero Rocher instead.

Most chocolate is disappointing now. Palm oil has ruined it. I had some Hotel Chocolate for Christmas and it tasted of cheese. Yuck.

I had some hotel chocolate and tasted so good

The big Milka bars are lovely but not available everywhere.

Wasn't there a thing about these being recalled

catandcoffee · 02/01/2023 17:51

Has chocolate always been so sicky sweet,or is it my taste buds?

mushroompickle · 02/01/2023 18:54

Too much oil. It's more like oil with flavourings now.shame as I used to really like it

ThreeRingCircus · 02/01/2023 19:03

Milk tray are disgusting now, as are Roses and Quality Street. I used to LOVE a tin of chocolates at Christmas but they are actually horrible since the recipe was changed.

mummyof2boys30 · 02/01/2023 20:01

There was recently a product recall on all milk tray. I work in retail and havent been able to get them in stock since

Squabbledee · 02/01/2023 20:32

Milk Tray is the dross of chocolate.

ImpartialMongoose · 02/01/2023 20:43

Cadbury's caramel has a rank nutty flavour to it now. I thought the one I bought was off, but the next time I bought one it was the same as so were the miniature ones in a Christmas selection box 🤢

Ididanamechange · 02/01/2023 20:57

Yes I had this with a box of milk tray this year. They tasted really off, as if they were years past their use by date or something.

70isaLimitNotaTarget · 02/01/2023 21:03

My DC (adults) didn't past Day 8 of their Hotel Chocolat Milk Chocolat Advent Calendars .

I bought them Elf Stockings as well , DS scoffed his , DD said they had no taste and gave up after thrying three (milk/white/caramel)

I bought some chocolates from a naice chocolate shop but they tasted stale (I was gutted ) Sad

Daisychainsandglitter · 02/01/2023 21:04

My DH bought a box of heroes and they were truly disgusting. What have they done to Cadbury's caramel? Tastes awful!

tillyandmilly · 02/01/2023 21:08

Bought Quality Street for Christmas - ate 3 and gave tin away as i thought they tasted disgusting and had that horrible palm oil in - yuk - I loved eating them way back in the 70’s/80’s - but no more!

noblegiraffe · 02/01/2023 21:10

There was a recall - this isn't a usual palm oil issue.

Cadbury said "‘This is due to a food quality issue, whereby we have identified that the cardboard packaging is in some instances not performing as it should"

They also said there isn't a food safety concern, which is hopefully reassuring!

Don't know how you can return them if they were a present though.

Even poundland has them now....on offer £1...mountains of them !

MargaretMead · 02/01/2023 21:19

If it tastes bad enough to throw away, complain! How will the manufacturers learn otherwise?

Here is the contact for Cadburys

If the manufacturer doesn’t want you to post the chocolates back, then take the uneaten chocolate in its packaging back to the shop and demand a refund.

Haveagentlechristmas · 02/01/2023 21:19

They have been recalled. Don't eat any more and take them back.

Do you remember when you coukd getilk tray on.a bar? Prob 46 years ago. Still remember the excitement of receiving one for helping in primary school library🤣

Yes! The Turkish Delight square was lovely!

Pinkandgreentrousers · 02/01/2023 21:25

My Mum and I were saying the same earlier. We didn't have any as they were so gross. My kids didn't seem to mind though.

Spck · 02/01/2023 21:29

Chocolate is so bad these days. I can remember the days when milk tray used to be in bars and it was delicious and a real treat. Quality Street how I wouldn’t even touch as it is more than tasteless - empty tasteless calories. I long for the days of tasty chocolate.
Aldi is actually the best at the moment. Tastes almost the same as chocolate used to taste.

debmcstay · 02/01/2024 18:45

Yes!! Got given a box of milk tray at Christmas and they have a weird plastic taste! I checked expiry and they are well within date

LauraNorda · 02/01/2024 18:54

I binned off Cadburys soon after they changed the recipes. My favourite now is Lily O'Briens.

Interesting read thanks for posting. But how can cardboard impact the taste of chocolate? unless they've used some sort of petrochemical spray over the cardboard? Really hope there is a proper investigation.

The4teddybears · 02/01/2024 19:38

You’re right. They’re horrible. We had some over Xmas . Lardy texture in mouth and awful taste .
