Is it just me or are soft drink bottle tops now rubbish?

Completely trivial, I realise. Over Christmas and New Year we did a lot of hosting and as such bought a variety of soft drinks-coke, fanta, sprite etc. We mainly bought 500ml bottles

Almost all of the tops were difficult to get off and left a sharp edge of plastic hanging off.

I thought maybe I was just unlucky

But I've just been to our local park cafe and bought a bottle and the same thing has happened

Is it just me or has something changed with the tops?

This seems a little harsh in the kids 😅

I was looking for this comment 😁

I started this thread in early Jan when I didn't realise what the reason was. Whilst I get the intent, I still find them so frustrating!

The other day I had a bottle and it took me ages to line up the cap to screw on properly as the attached ring meant I couldn't line it up with the lid. Turns out even after 2-3 mins of faffing, I hadn't managed it correctly as the contents of the drink poured out into my handbag and then down my coat

Arghhhh

Beyond annoying. Handbag covered in Diet Coke.

the80sweregreat · 28/02/2024 20:00

They are shit

They're really awkward for my dd who only has one hand.

Agree completely @MargaretThursday disability lobby groups as well as age lobby groups should really take this on. It's disgraceful.

I hadn’t noticed the date you started this thread. I did wonder if the still having left over soft drinks bought for Christmas guests was some Mumsnet I Don’t Normally Drink Fizzy Pop thing! Grin

I have to take medication pills about 6 times every day and fiddling around with caps that have horrible sharp-edged tags between the bottle and the cap are totally the pits. I am old and the skin on my fingers is thin and risks getting cut. The idiots that thought this up should be made to open and close these bottles endlessly. This going a step too far. A retrograde step that should be reversed. I have always put the caps, along with the empty bottles, into our plastic waste bin. People should be encouraged to follow good recycling practice, rather than having bottle manufacturers cause miseries to everyone! I support the EU in almost all things, BUT NOT THIS :-)

Buckfastbenny · 21/06/2024 17:52

I'm all for a bit of re cycling if it helps. What I do find interesting is that it highlights why Brexit was such a waste of taxpayers billions and hardship for a lot of UK people. Even this small matter of bottle tops being a EU rule we are still having to accept it, even now when not in EU. Worst still we have no say in the matter like we once had. Brexit 'take back control' ha ha. Brexit less control more like it.

NotAgain1963 · 22/06/2024 19:13

I really dislike the new design of bottles with the cap attached. I appreciate it's for recycling purposes, but they annoy me because the cap keeps hitting you on the nose when you drink from the bottle. Even more annoying is the fact that they are more difficult to open, and then I struggle to get the damn lid back on the bottle. I have arthritis in my thumbs so this is especially irritating. Several times I've ended up spilling the contents of the bottle.

Wizardcalledoz · 22/06/2024 19:18

You turn it so the lid is at the side while you drink, then it doesnt hit your nose. Then pull it up and out slightly before putting it back on top to twist closed. Its annoying but not that big if a deal for most of us. I can see it might cause issues for some with mobility issues though

DuckWithOneWing · 22/06/2024 19:23

I'm disabled, and I really struggle with the new lids. If I'm at home I get my partner to pull them off but if I'm not with him I just can't do it on my own.

MaryMaryVeryContrary · 22/06/2024 19:24

I was saying this exact same thing the other day

tapdancingmum · 22/06/2024 19:25

They still take the lids off when you go to a concert or a football match but it now takes longer as they have to snap them. I think they must have lid snapping lessons 🤔

BabyBobs · 22/06/2024 19:25

I snip every one off.

It is a stupid idea to attach the lid to the bottle neck.

Koolsgang · 22/06/2024 19:26

Omg YES OP! I hate them too! It’s so hard to drink out of the bottle now without the cap getting in your way. I get them wanting to make recycling the caps easier but they’re just not user friendly as this thread illustrates.

hastalav · 22/06/2024 19:30

You all shouldn't be drinking pop anyway. 😉

easylikeasundaymorn · 22/06/2024 19:34

another hater here!
on some bottles they don't go back on easily at all because the little bit of plastic keeping them together, you have to make sure you've got it on in exactly the right place to make it watertight
Didn't do so and smoothie went all over my nice bag, and broke my phone 🙄

think they need to go back to the drawing board on that one, if most people are just tearing them off anyway it's not going to make much difference with recycling.

NeverDropYourMooncup · 22/06/2024 19:37

On the contrary, I believe the new style bottle tops are very effective. Haven't been able to open a single one thanks to arthritic hands and their shitty design with absolutely no regard for disabilities, mind, but they're great at making sure the bottles never, ever open leak.

TaraTories · 22/06/2024 19:39

As someone with a slightly longer than average nose, yes.

I hope they are actually recycling them properly now and it's not just another side con to take our eye off the fact we haven't decent recycling centres.

TwoLeftSocksWithHoles · 22/06/2024 19:45

I don't know why wine bottles still have corks, couldn't they have that 'baby bottle teat' feature. It would certainly save me a perilous job of stretching it to fit my bottle of Piat d'Or each evening whilst watching Flog-It.

FGS. That's so funny 😂

largeprintagathachristie · 22/06/2024 19:50

I had my first experience with once of these new lids the other day. I swear l’d put the top back on the bottle of water and had double checked it was tight.

The whole thing leaked in my bag, mostly absorbed into a fancy, expensive, sourdough baguette I’d bought myself as a treat, as I’d passed an M&S food hall and I hardly ever do.

No sourdough baguette for lunch and was v annoyed.

It's the same with bottles of water

They're on bottles of water, too. 🤫

I cut my finger opening a bottle of water.

Is it just me or are soft drink bottle tops now rubbish?
