What makes them happy? How do you know this is real contentment as opposed to Insta-fake happiness?

@ThanksLots Try this place. Simply wonderful site to go on and immerse yourself in beautiful places. Like disappearing into a picture Narnia style!

I think regular exercise and helping other people are probably also common to most people like this.

Good call. Helping other people - so long as it's your choice and not manipulation etc, really helps mood. I struggle with depression and it's something I make an effort to do when I feel low. Even if it is just to pay a compliment to a stranger.

I am loving these insight - absolute gold.

Common threads: pleasure in the small things, gratitude, cultivating (RL) community, financial security, being able to push through tough times knowing there are blue skies ahead...

But I did love this @DillDanding : We love her and hate her in equal measure. 😁

Thank you for pulling the commonalities together. It's something to think about.

The happiest person I knew killed themselves.
The smileyest people I knew were depressed or had horrific stuff going on in the background.

The people who are genuinely happy are the ones who don't give a fuck, I guess. They don't smile if they don't feel it, they put themselves first, they aren't anxious, easy going laid back.

My mum. She is sunshine in a bottle and has passed this trait onto DS.

@SummerHouse you sound exactly like me!!! @ColinRobinsonsfamiliar - yes that sums it up- please in almost anything.

I also like many on here have had quite significant mental health problems, so it's interesting that we describe ourselves as really happy. I guess we know how bad things can really be.

I think I'd like to be one of the old ladies you describe when I get there. Not bitter or moaning, but content with what I have and taking pleasure in everything.
