How much money do you feel comfortable keeping in your current account?

Let me start by saying that I do not intend this to be an "I'm considerably richer than you" thing, nor to be insensitive during a time when so many are struggling.
I was just wondering how much you generally keep in your everyday current account on average. I try to keep it as low as possible after having my card cloned and being wiped out as there was more than I needed to be in there. (Got the money back thankfully, but it was a ball ache). So I tend to keep just enough to cover any direct debits in, plus a couple of hundred. Anything else I stick on a credit card and pay off in full at the end of the month.
However, despite my gentle nagging to do the same, my husband also had his card cloned just before Christmas, and he had his account cleared of quite a bit.
I just think that with so much card fraud my way is safer, and wondered what other people do.

I'm going to discuss this with DH later - at the moment we have approx. 2 months wages at the start of the month and 1+ at the end of the month in the current account. We've got a basic savings account with the same bank too so there is no real reason why we're keeping such a buffer in the current account.

It's so easy to transfer between accounts now so it makes sense to keep most of your cash out of your current account to keep it safe.
Even if you mostly get your money back from the bank in the event of your card being stolen, it's such a faff sorting it out, waiting for a replacement card (if you don't use a banking app) etc.

Op how did they get a LL your wage.

DH said they would have to go through two steps authentication.

Or be limited to daily withdrawal?

Do you know how they did it

I moved everything into two current accounts when interest rates went to shit. Santander 123 is good. There is a bank guarantee, I think it’s circa 75k? After the Icelandic bank saga the government put a security thing in place

I have a bills account which I don't take the card out for.

I also a spending account with card and Apple Pay and put into it what I need to spend for the week and transfer more of going out shopping etc (which isn't often)

The rest stays in another current account that I don't take the card out for.

With banking apps it's easy to do this and like you I've always done it due to possible fraud and contactless.

Aren't we covered for £80k? If I ever have more than that I will spread it out 😜

You're covered if a bank goes into liquidation. Not to £75/£80k in fraud

Yes, thanks @sentientpuddle - it is!
I honestly hadn't really thought much about keeping that much in the current - it is a bit silly when it can be in the savings account (also earning naff all interest but that is a different issue).

Thanks @absolutelyincandescentwithrage for starting this thread! Just moved out just over approx 1.5 months wages from current account into savings account and left about 0.5 months wages. Took seconds! I could take it further of course...but at least that's better.

You first.

Did you read the OP, or literally just the thread title?

absolutelyincandescentwithrage · 03/01/2023 11:27

@Coppergate My husband had 2.5 months pay in his account when he was cloned! He got it back, but it's the feeling of insecurity and the hassle that is the worst thing, after that initial sighting of an empty account!
