Middle of nowhere needed for next NY eve

Lovely people, please can I have your suggestions or experience of somewhere we can decamp to for next NY eve where there is no firework noise at all. We have a caravan but am prepared to rent a cottage or even a camper. Our dog is super scared of fireworks and we have huge huge mortar bombs going on for a long time near us. She's now found a safe place in our house which she will go to for the ones let off on random evenings. However, the NY ones are massive. This year we went to my mothers and although the noise was no where near as bad, even with medication, she just couldn't find a place to settle so there was a lot of very stressed behaviour going on.

I am wondering whether we can drive or stay somewhere completely rural/silent. We are based in the SE. The firework thing has been going on for weeks. She now won't go out in the back garden after dark because of randoms being set off. Before anyone suggests it, she takes absolutely no notice of fireworks on tv, ipad, or recorded - sleeps through those and yes, we are using every known device, technique to help her.
So, if you live somewhere where there was not a peep this NY or can suggest somwhere - please do.

I would look to rent a camper van and look for a site that is sort of in a farmers field. I wouldn’t even do a big site. I did rent a fab cottage on a farm one year in Yorkshire, that’s really the kind of place you need. They have animals and will not be letting off fireworks. I would, say Peak District or Yorkshire moors.

@MardyMincepie Yes, that's the sort of thing I was thinking of. Can you remember where in Yorkshire (husband has family there so we would go that far)

@KathieFerrars

I'm in the SE. I'd happily house swap with you as I LOVE fireworks & the large 'mortar bomb' sounding ones!

However, despite only hearing a couple of really quiet ones this year, other years it has been noisy for hours (not huge ones though) so I don't feel I could guarantee to provide what your poor dog needs.

She sounds like a well loved doggo!! Lucky girl!! X

Thank you @SkylightSkylight She reacts to any thump - the ones at my mother's weren't that bad so if we are going to do this I think it needs to be silent. I has thought of driving to the Ashdown Forest or even out Fulking way but don't know if they'd be rural enough. The problem I have is not just her but me! I am now getting anxiety attacks and MH goes down hill when I see her in such a state. It shouldn't affect me on such a visceral level but it does.

We went to centre parcs last year and there wasn't any fireworks (due to wildlife). We took our dog too and it was peaceful.

KathieFerrars · 02/01/2023 12:09

Ooo @Cornelious Which one did you go to? Had ruled out CP because I thought there would be fireworks if not in the park then locally.

We used to live in rural Oxfordshire and never heard fireworks

Cornelious · 02/01/2023 13:40

Elveden. I know that fireworks are banned at all the centre parcs so I'd think you'd be fine in any of the sites.

Glencoe? Dumfries and Galloway?

Poor wee poppet & I totally understand why it gets to you too!! It's hard when they're so distressed & you feel so helpless.

How long does it take for her to return to normal?

How does your DH cope with it?

KathieFerrars · 02/01/2023 17:27

@SkylightSkylight Last years 21 -22 NY eve it took weeks to get her back. This year she was deffo still in distress yesterday - did manage to get her to walk but when we met my SIL and her dog (they love each other) she wouldn't/couldn't walk or play with her. Slept a lot once we drove home. There was one lot of fireworks last night and she took herself off in the downstairs loo where she hides. Went for a walk with DH today and we all went out with my eldest son (whom she loves) to Standen this afternoon. She was edgy and rather scared as busy but we went for a walk. This time of year we don't let her off if there is any chance of a bang - we walk early at weekends due to shooting at farms a way a way. Husband is a lot more chilled and it doesn't affect him like it does me. I am just beginning to feel normal again (although some of this has to do with my mum) although still feeling wobbly. Just think total avoidance next year might be an idea. We do have tranquilzers for her but they make her stressed because she feels peculiar.

If it wasn't for this fear she'd be the perfect dog

Won't you need the same for Guy Fawkes ?

KathieFerrars · 02/01/2023 18:05

@Wonnle Possibly. I survived this fireworks with the tranquilizers and her finding her safe place. Apart from one lot (very close - lit up the back of the house) which had her scrabbling to get out of the door, a combo of thundershirts, tenko drumming, drugs, homeopathy got us through. Any local displays, although can be heard , are distant. The NY ones are very near - a local restaurant has a display for around 15 mins and it is so so loud. Then there are two twats that let off mortar bombs at midnight, 12.30, 1.00 am and 1.30. With big gaps in between so no sooner does she get settled then it starts again. Ideally, if I could find somewhere localish or within a couple of hours drive then we could use it for both.

Unfortunately, I don't think Scotland is viable given that we are nearer the south coast of UK.
