Where to buy decent furniture?

I don’t know where to start?looking. I need a wardrobe for DD. I’d want something better quality than the Ikea stuff we’ve had in the past. I’ve bought from Aspace and Made before but they’ve both gone under. John Lewis is too pricey. Where should I be looking for decent, wooden, long lasting furniture that won’t financially break me? Is dunelm any good?

I came to say John Lewis.

Though M&S has also been good nice, solid wood, well made things, generally arrives quite quickly too.

Also have some some furniture from oak furniture land from when we couldn’t afford the John Lewis version. Those pieces have been good quality too though I think you have choose the range you go for carefully as I’ve head mixed things about them.

Your local auction house. Decent quality furniture for next to nothing.

I like antique and vintage furniture. You can pick up beautifully well made, quality bargains in flea markets and even on eBay/Gumtree etc. Often cheaper than Ikea.

I have a bathroom cabinet that goes around sink stand which is from dunelm. It was cheap and it’s pretty decent but I don’t think I would get a wardrobe from there if it was of the same material, I don’t think something tall would be sturdy, I’ve had cheap wardrobes before and they tend to lean over or the doors don’t shut properly.

can you get a decent one on finance? Or a fitted one if you can find a cheap local company?

I guess it depends what you mean by decent. Dd1 has an old Creamery solid painted oak wardrobe which is lovely and dtds have IKEA ones (not the basic ones) which look lovely and feel solid with great storage options.

Second hand solid wood pieces from eBay and furniture warehouses, use Shiply for delivery

Some ikea pieces are solid wood rather than particle board

Ive also had nice stuff (John Lewis pieces) from local Facebook groups free and cheaply, just have to know what you want and be prepared to wait.

I agree with buying solid wood from eBay - use Shipley or man with a van service to get it in your house.
Will be a fraction of the cost of Dunhelm etc and will last forever (plus you can repaint whenever you want a change)

Second hand, if feeling craft sand it down and repaint

Just found myself going down a local auction house rabbit hole - so much stuff I never knew I wanted! Thanks for the tips - will keep looking. Will look again at ikea too as we’ve only ever really bought from the bottom of the range there, having always treated it as ‘temporary’ furniture.

We've bought our wardrobes from a local furniture charity shop. They always have lots of decent, solid wood furniture for cheap, its never taken us more than a couple of trips a couple of weeks apart to find something suitable. Ranging from antique to a few years old. I did similar for my old house, particularly good if you have quirky tastes as you can find some really random stuff (sadly my partner vetoes the more unconventional styles).

Samara19 · 02/06/2023 11:09

I used to buy second hand all the time but I feel that all the really good pieces are very expensive. I also have arthritis so my hands can't take the sanding etc etc
Powergridgirl, is right , however, at least your furniture is more one of a kind and individual.

Last year I bought an Oxford Wardrobe from Hyggehansen. Its all pine and is quite solid. Not as expensive as the other wardrobe on offer, either!

This.

We never buy new furniture. Older is far higher quality.
