I was just wondering how often you have a blood test? Does your GP surgery remind you or do you just book?

Thanks!

Hi, I go once per year. They usually let me know if I'm due one, but if not just make a note once a year to give them a nudge and they'll give you a bloods form. It just makes sure if the dose of levothyroxine you are on is still correct for your levels as occasionally they fluctuate. I've had an underactive thyroid for around 11 years.

newtb · 01/01/2023 19:10

Usually every 6 months, but had my dose increased last year, so now every 3. I'm on tri-iodothyronine as I can't convert T4 to T3. Also, not in the UK but France.

If your dose is stable then it’s annually in my surgery.
The NHS now do annual checks in the month of your birth so you may go a couple of months over if they are trying to bring you in line for your birth month. If you think you are overdue you can contact them, most surgeries have an email address on their website now or you could drop a note in.

Once a year. They text me to book in an appointment usually when I request a repeat prescription around the time it needs doing.

Happiestwithtea · 01/01/2023 19:15

I see my endocrinologist every year and they ask for bloods just before the appointment. I’m not sure whether this is because I have a lot of autoimmune issues though, perhaps if I just had thyroid problems I might just get them checked through my Gp. I’m not sure what the protocol is now.

Floralnomad · 01/01/2023 19:16

I have mine done every 6 months but that’s only because I have other stuff done every 6 months , if it was just thyroid I’d be happy with every 12-18 months for bloods as the GP is always reluctant to change the dose anyway .

Mintakan · 01/01/2023 19:18

Every 6 months.

I control Hashimoto’s with a carnivore diet so my numbers are great but my doc still insists we keep a close eye. She’s wonderful.

CharityShopChic · 01/01/2023 19:19

I have an underactive thyroid - never can remember if that's hypo or hyper. I never ever get reminders to have a blood test, ever. It's always up to me to remember. I had one just before Christmas, before that, it was pre-pandemic as through most of 2020, all of 2021 and 11 months of 2022 my GP surgery were very clear that they were on an emergency footing and not dealing with trivialities like routine blood tests.

TheOtherHotstepper · 01/01/2023 19:22

I'm hypo and on treatment for the last ten years. I never get an annual review or blood test, but they will generally check TSH and FT4 together with co-factors if I ask.

hallodarknessmyoldfriend · 01/01/2023 19:24

I see my endocrinologist twice a year for blood test & ultrasound. Now that I am pregnant I see him every 6 weeks (just for blood tests though).

I have Hashimoto (generally well controlled).

Pipersouth · 01/01/2023 19:25

Mine is once a year - only reminded when the online tablets services doesn’t allow me to order. Automated but doesn’t allow it to be booked before - PITA around Christmas time!

SeaToSki · 01/01/2023 19:27

Im hypo, and I get tested every 3 months. I'm going thru menopause though and the dropping oestrogen impacts how much thyroxine I need to take. It will probably change as I get older and my hormones stabilise.

For anyone trying to remember if hypo or hyper is high or low, this is how I remember it. Low has a o and so does hypo … so they go together (also hyperactivity is like being on a high) 🤣

Supersimkin2 · 01/01/2023 19:34

Every 3 months. Mines gone wobbly since Covid, keep having to up the dose.

Okly · 01/01/2023 19:36

Thanks everyone. I really appreciate all of you taking the time to answer. Very helpful to know!

I was diagnosed last March and had 6-weekly blood tests up until last October, when they said they'll go to 3-monthly now.

Blip · 01/01/2023 19:40

Annually if stable, more often if a dose change is required.

TrulyFubar · 01/01/2023 19:43

I had mine tested just over a year ago BUT I was literally in A&E this week with Atrial Fibrillation which was found to be from critically low Thyroxine levels. My dose has shot up and I'll be tested again in 6 weeks to see where we're at.

Make sure you get your tests done!
