How would you fill your days

I am very lucky in that I don't strictly have to work, but I do work part time for a charity because I love what I do.
I also volunteer (yes, at a Food Bank frequently mentioned on this thread Grin), I also spend time with my elderly DPs.
I'm not going to lie and say I would spend time exercising, travelling, gardening or cooking lovely meals for my family because none of those really appeal to me! But that's the sort of thing my retired DH does ... he's currently decorating whilst I relax in front of the tv before going off to sort shelves at the Food Bank & then watch a film with my 90 year old DM.

Fuwari · 01/01/2023 11:21

If ample funds, I would spend a lot of time travelling.
I would also exercise more, read, garden, crafting, DIY projects, learn languages, waste time online (as I do now!).
I would happily retire tomorrow if my situation allowed it. My job is ok, but it’s really not interesting or mentally stimulating. My work is more boring than my hobbies so I wouldn’t be bored if I gave it up.

SeekingAnswerz · 01/01/2023 11:23

I’d spend wholesome quality time with my kids

Ballcactus · 01/01/2023 11:27

I would do a masters in fine art part time and spend the rest of my days doing fun things with the kids and having a clean house

I don't work. I spend my time staying on top of a big house and a big family. I cook nice meals for everyone. I usually have some kind of diy project on the go. I have a dog and live close to a lovely NT place so walk a lot and we often walk down to see the deer.
My upbringing was very different to my childrens

in what way is up bringing diffeernet to your children’s ?and what kinda dog do you have ?

I do gym classes three times a week, walk, travel lots, am learning Spanish, read a lot, watch a few films occasionally, keep my home nice, meet friends, go to the pub, shop in town, try to keep things nice in the garden, cook a lot along with meal planning and grocery shopping, i really enjoy my non working life.

C1N1C · 01/01/2023 11:36

Same thing I do now at work. I'm lucky.

They say get an education and do what you love doing. I did that.

Newname33 · 01/01/2023 11:50

I think it depends if you mean don't need to work as in mortgage paid off, spending money and comfortable or fabulously wealthy.

If the first I'd probably still work 3 or 4 days as I like my job and ds has started school plus many of my friends work full time so I'd otherwise spend lots of time on my own, but I'd use the extra income to fund some fabulous holidays and extend the house in various ways. And get a cleaner. On my days off I'd potter, try some crafty bits and spa days. I'd invest a lot in self care and get my hair done/nails/ massages regularly.

If fabulously wealthy I'd like to buy some farm land and animals (pigs, goats, sheep, chickens and some horses) and hire some staff to do the grunt work whilst I could waft around having cuddles and feeding and riding the horses. Plus all of the above!

FirstTimeMaybes · 01/01/2023 11:59

Volunteer at our local animal rescue.

Cook from scratch.

Go to the gym.

See my friends more.

kingtamponthefurred · 01/01/2023 12:08

I'd do more of the things I already do in my spare time-travel, reading, walking, gardening, studying, seeing friends. I would probably take longer trips away and sign up for an Open University course. And I would look for a voluntary role. But I would not be giving up my cleaner.

troppibambini6 · 01/01/2023 12:16

@Pheonix2023 It was just me and my mum she worked a lot (absolutely no judgement she did an amazing job) my dad was an alcoholic so any time spent with him was pretty horrific really
.
I was left to my own devices a lot and there was never anybody at home when I got in.
It made me very independent (cooked, cleaned, ironed from a young age) but I can't say it was a particularly enjoyable childhood.
I was always very envious of other families with brothers, sisters and parents who were there.

I knew if I had a family I wanted to do it differently. I have six kids (2 of them are step but their mum died when they were young so they are as much mine as the bio ones and we are very close)

Our dog is a blue staffy who is absolutely bonkers and eats your slippers if not walked at least twice a day Smile

YorkieTheRabbit · 01/01/2023 12:20

I’m lucky as I don’t need to work.
My days are spent looking after the house, cooking, baking, doing stuff in the greenhouse, gardening, bits of craft. We also have two dogs. Im never bored 😊

potatoesalad · 01/01/2023 12:39

Travel, gym, walk, run, learn another language, have a spotless & organised house

Everydayaschoolday · 01/01/2023 12:47

I do all the housework, meals, carer role, shopping, gardening, homework helper, we share running to kids clubs. For my own pleasure, I cross-stitch, felt appliqué, learning sewing machine stitching, read, Pilates, swimming, visit my parents lots, watch a film, take my mum to to the cinema occasionally during the day if there’s something we both want to see, and take Spaniel for a lead walk (DH does the early-morning long-distance one). DH works FT, sometimes away for extended periods.

lljkk · 01/01/2023 12:50

I'd still work because I would hate to not contribute.
I hate having high profile so my job would not be as head of a charity or any public profile role, it would be low key supportive just like it is now.

Lampzade · 01/01/2023 12:57

I would just do the same things that I do
already. I would just have more time to do it
Volunteer reader/ maths tutor
Exercise-
I am learning two languages
Read more books
I would book cheap tickets to various countries and spend a couple of days there

PinkBuffalo · 01/01/2023 13:02

I would work with animals and spend even more time In The gym cos it is my happy place
Hate my job now and would love this life so much better

Riapia · 01/01/2023 13:30

MN, YouTube, Amazon..

IntentionalError · 01/01/2023 13:37

Not needing to work for money would mean that I would be independently wealthy, in which case I would do a lot of travelling, which I really enjoy. Places I have never been to include Australia, New Zealand, all of South & Central America, Japan, the Pacific Islands etc etc.

MassiveSalad22 · 01/01/2023 13:38

Whatever I want!! I don’t understand the people who say they would be bored if they didn’t work😵‍💫 there is sooooo much more to life! Currently I: paint, sew, crochet, exercise, socialise, go to galleries, volunteer, do lots of online courses, diy etc

Alreadyxmas · 01/01/2023 13:45

I'm in the category you describe.

My time is filled with the following -
Fertility appointments
Looking after and walking our dog
Cooking/baking
Cleaning (I spend a significant amount of time on this because I enjoy a clean home)
All the life admin, shopping, planning for events and holidays etc
Gym classes

Runningintolife · 01/01/2023 14:03

Probably wouldn't admit this irl but I would pay them to let me keep doing my job because I find it so fascinating rewarding and fulfilling. Until 2 years ago I was dreaming of retirement, now age 51 with the possibility of retiring at 55 I'm not sure I will. Not expecting this feeling to last but I am really enjoying it - I have never had a passion like it.
Humans need meaning and purpose beyond leisure so I would recommend building retirement around that.

Florissant · 01/01/2023 14:04

I would be a perpetual student, doing degree after degree for fun.

BrutusMcDogface · 01/01/2023 14:13

I’m always intrigued to know what jobs people do when they say they’d still do it because they love it so much! Especially @Runningintolife !

I would be a better mum to my four kids if I didn’t work, and that’s a sad fact. I would also declutter and decorate the house which is desperately needed.

PatientlyWaiting21 · 01/01/2023 14:43

Travel with my one year old, dog and partner!
