Have had a stupid money week, anyone else?

Thought after Christmas spending would stop but I’ve made one mistake after another this week and I feel sick with it.

  1. Dropped a piece of mince pie on the floor and the dog got there quicker than me. £390 to get her seen by the vet on a bank holiday in case she’d swallowed a raisin (hadn’t). Will get most back on insurance but we hadn’t claimed all year so were due to get £200 back at the end of the month

2 sat on my sons glasses. £30 so not too bad but they don’t make the same frames anymore and now he’s got avengers glasses and he’s only 3. Why are all toddler glasses branded?! He has no idea who these people are and isn’t in to superheros at all.

3 dropped my headphones in the road without realising and they got run over. Not replacing them for a while so dog walks will be more boring/mindful

4 forgot to pay for airport drop off when I gave my DM a lift on Boxing Day (it was 6am, I was very tired) so now waiting for the PCN which will be £100 reduced to £60 for early payment.

I feel a bit sick at it all, nearly £500 in seven days. Hoping the start of a new year will stop it all. It better had!

Can anyone make me feel less stupid with their own financial mishaps since Christmas?!

Raisins and grapes are toxic to dogs. You did the right thing OP.

Honestly a lot of these posts are about things that have happened either due to clumsiness or poor time management. I would hate to waste money on really avoidable stuff like some of the examples in these posts.

Thats kind of the whole point of the thread, no?

Currently awaiting fine notice for getting into a bus lane while trying to find a parking space in pre-Christmas town centre. Nothing received yet, but it's probably in a holding pen somewhere with the rest of my mail. It's a rare year when I don't get caught out in some kind of parking or minor traffic violation, despite having comparatively low mileage.

I'm just stunned that anyone would take their dog to the vet in case they had swallowed a raisin Shock

Have a Google about it and let us know afterwards if you still are still stunned.

@Scalottia

I don't need to 'have a google'

I'm also not the only person on the thread who wouldn't go running to the vet over a raisin.

itsthefinalcountdown1 · 01/01/2023 14:01

Raisins are poisonous to dogs. One lone raison however is not. A little bit of mince pie would really, really struggle to kill a dog

I hadn’t heard of idiot tax. Makes me feel a whole lot better about an incident just before Christmas.

i paid off the very last of my student loan. I was so excited to finally be debt free (‘debt free before 2023’ — a goal I’d been working towards for a long time). I used the wrong account details and incurred a needless £70 transaction fee. I was so fucked off.

still. Doesn’t take the shine off the overall accomplishment.

Cheese.. Huge piles of cheese.

Post Christmas party. I bought plenty of cheese and grapes for cheese board expectingto have plentyover for new year and general holisay stuff.. and so did DP. I now have aa huge pile of cheese glaring at me every time I open the fridge. To give you some idea we had 35 people at party!!

Really? We live in the country, own two labradors and have paid for the OO vet when lab 1 ate a bowl of grapes.

Though these days I might be inclined hold my breath and hope for the best given the cost of vets!

When I was a kid I used to feed my dog raisins all the time (had no idea they were dangerous, obviously!!!!) and he lived with til he was 18.

Mumski45 · 01/01/2023 16:55

Realised I have paid some idiot tax by being covered by 3 (yes 3 and not 2) breakdown contracts. One RAC covered me for 12 months free when I had my car serviced, my existing RAC auto renewed as I didn't have the sense to stop it and for some reason DH had paid for me along with his AA cover. 🫢

I did a buy now pay later on very. Was due to be paid by 5th December. I meant to pay it before going to my friends wedding on the 2nd as i had the amount in my account. Didnt have my card on me when i went to do it. Then completely forgot until the 7th so incurred £77 in interest. Had the full amount in the account to pay it off which makes it so frustrating that if I had done it 2 days early I wouldn't have incurred any interest 😭

I have learnt a lesson though to just pay as soon as I have the money not wait if I use the buy now pay later again.

Your own sill fault for taking dog to vets over a raisin, stupidity tax indeed, could have easy saved yourself that money.
