I want to stop looking at my phone in the night as I wake and look at it several times which is dreadful for my sleep .

Am I alone?!

I fail to turn my phone off or keep it in another room as don’t have the will power and hoping to find someone else battling too much phone use too and see if we can beat it.
I might replace it with reading a book at night but it’s hard as baby is in my room!

It’s not realistic to never use your phone. OP is wanting to cut down, particularly at night

Yes it is.

The only time I carry my mobile is when I'm riding my motorbike.

How do people contact you? Family and friends?

@FairlyIncognito last night I used white noise (from a radio) instead of podcasts, I still woke up 4-5 times but went back to sleep fine. I'm pleased as I didn't think I could do it! I will persevere and see if I stop waking up so much. My youngest is 6 but my brain is still in newborn mode!

FairlyIncognito · 02/01/2023 10:38

celeryfavour white noise sounds good actually as it’s not interesting enough to stay up and listen to lol.
I slept the deepest I have in a long time, with one waking at 5am when I got up and read a book for 10 mins. I was amazed how quickly I felt tired again and went back to sleep whilst normally I’d be on my phone and awake longer ! I then switched my phone on at 9:30.
im quite excited about this!

I'm removing TikTok today, spending far too much time on it 🫣

I'm not sure how to do it as I'm a terrible sleeper and listen to podcasts all night with my phone under my pillow. I do think life would be better without my phone though.

The fire service gave a talk to our students about the dangers of keeping a phone under your pillow. If the battery overheats it can cause a fire. The photos they showed were shocking.

Celeryfavour · 02/01/2023 11:15

@42isthemeaning thanks for this, I can see how that would happen as my phone does get hot sometimes. I won't do it anymore!

@FairlyIncognito that sounds like good progress already! I bet you will feel great today for having slept well.

@AtSomePointInLife tiktok is one of my nemeses! I delete it from time to time. I find it a really positive place but it's the endless content which gets me!

Oh god! Thanks for this, I normally keep mine next to me but will listen to podcasts / audio books via my earphones at night if I can't sleep (normally on a timer to go off) - the other day I forgot to set a timer and my phone was under the pillow and it was SO hot in the morning.

Tinytigertail · 02/01/2023 14:35

So glad I found this post! I also waste a lot of time in the morning on my phone! I'm going to delete TikTok now, as it's too easy to fall down a hole and waste an hour.

FairlyIncognito · 02/01/2023 21:55

that’s useful to know about the danger of phones under a pillow.
i Have 2 books near me and yet to find our kindles but all set for night 3 without a phone. I find it so helpful having you all here too as it gives me both solidarity and a feeling of accountability! I’ve been on my phone much less today too but been busy with friends anyway .

Tinytigertail that sounds a very good idea to try no tick-tock .

I’ve done really well over the last two days, I haven’t played any games on my phone and I haven’t missed Facebook or insta at all. I did briefly go on Facebook via my laptop earlier but wasn’t even on it for 5minutes as it was a bit boring. Just goes to show how addictive it can be to scroll on a phone because if I’d opened the app I would’ve been on it for an hour easy.
I’ve crocheted lots, watched (actually watched without distraction) the tv with the dc, and started reading a book again.
I do find myself keep picking up my phone to go on then realising there’s nothing interesting on it any more. There’s only so many times you can read the bbc news app. I guess that’s more habit though, and will hopefully go in time

FairlyIncognito · 03/01/2023 09:21

I had my first terrible night fidgeting without my phone and didn’t sleep til 2:30/3am as a result but I didn’t cave at least.
I kept thinking of you others here making progress too and it really boosted me and stops me giving in.
When I realised I really couldn’t get to sleep I read half a book then made a loaf of bread!!

Hi there. Looking at my phone in the evening is also my problem. I noticed that I just need to have something to do. I recently bought "Friends" jigsaw puzzles, so this keeps me occupied. I don't want to substitute phone with TV, so it's not an otpion. I am allowed to use laptop in the evening as long as I do something productive- I am trying to learn coding in java (as hobby, because I have boring job), but no facebook and this sort of shit. It's really hard to break this habit. They want us to keep looking at the screen.
