Advise regarding becoming self employed

Hey. I'm wanting to become self employed. But I also don't want any "on line presents".
I have an abusive ex husband and a no contact order regarding our children. So how do you register a business and gain recognition on line with out revealing your identity? Anyone else been in this situation?

Do you mean online presence?

Make sure your business name is nothing to do with your name. You can then register a website and social media etc in your business name.

It'll depend on your business and what services you're providing but you might not need to register anywhere if you're simply freelancing at first. What will you be doing?

AnotherAppleThief · 30/12/2022 22:01

Do you mean presence? That changes your question!

Anyway, assuming you do, it might depend on your line of work but I have a Facebook page and IG all under my business name and just use rhag to advertise and promote my work. Some things can't be helped though, I get tagged in enquires with my name but if you dont have that then it won't happen.

Justmeandme19 · 30/12/2022 22:10

Ha ha 🤣 sorry for the typo!
Another Apple what's IG and rhag?
The business is only micro providing so nothing which should have much of of an on line presence.
I know you can use a company name but is your actual name also in the public domain when you register on companies house ? Sorry literally don't have a clue.
I've been so so careful protecting our identaty that I don't want to mess it up now.

Instagram and 'that'

Companies house only applies to Limited companies, does that apply or will you just be a sole trader?

OP "I know you can use a company name but is your actual name also in the public domain when you register on companies house ? Sorry literally don't have a clue."

yes, it is. And the registered business address. I haven't tried to alter my name for Companies House so it might be possible, but the short version is yes. So you will need a business address away from your home. I don't know if
PO Boxes are allowed.

NameIsBryceQuinlan · 30/12/2022 22:19

Your name will only be listed on companies house if you become a limited company. You don't need to have your home address, it could be an accountant office or a PO Box.

Where else do you think it will be?

EmmaAgain22 · 30/12/2022 22:19

Can you operate as a sole trader rather than as a company?

Thank you so so much. Some really good advise.
I will go off and do some research regarding my options.

You don't have to go Ltd and register with Companies House to be self-employed. You can just register with HMRC as a sole trader (and in this case your name won't be listed anywhere you don't want it to be).

It depends on the amount of profit you're likely to make. If you're below the higher tax threshold it's better to be a sole-trader as accounts are simpler and therefore cheaper to do (you don't necessarily need an accountant, you can do the books yourself). If you're above the higher tax threshold but below the VAT threshold you're better to be a Ltd company.

As a sole trader you can even employ other people in your business if that's what you want to do.

Depending on the service you are offering you don't necessarily need to have your name on your website, nor your address. You don't even need a website depending on the business.

Lonely lonely lonely
No no plans on making any big money atm. Just a small business with hours to suit. We're talking about £1,500 a month. I'm just feeling unfulfilled in my current job and have some ideas. I want to offer care work, companionship, cooking,
Etc to people in the local community. I want to choose my hours so I'm not doing 12 hour shifts like I'm doing atm. It's too much with your children in tow. Thank you all for your help

So much depends on your line of work, and the level of profits that you are likely to generate.

For some types of work (e.g. any kind of clinical consultancy, any field with a higher chance of public liability claims against you) it is advisable to operate through a limited company, for others less so.

For any kind of personal consultancy, it would be difficult to operate without putting your name out there, because you are the product.

Lonelylonelylonely · 30/12/2022 22:57

With the line of work you're offering you'll probably want to get your name out there, but that doesn't necessarily mean your address of you are not offering a service from your home. Even if you are working from home this can just give an approximate location rather than an exact address until you've established contact with a client. In fact it's better not to have your exact address listed as this can affect your house insurance (e.g. your exact address is listed and you've posted on your business FB page that you'll be away between certain dates etc).

In my line of work my name is out there and my approximate location, but not my exact address. For similar reasons I don't want ex-h to have my exact address.
