Why does God answer some prayers and not others?

locationforna · 30/12/2022 20:59

Just this really.

If you are a Christian, please can you tell me why God answers some peoples prayers and not others?

For example, one woman could be praying her baby survives. Baby dies. Another woman with the exact same situation of an unwell baby - Baby lives. Both prayed, they prayed a lot

Why is it you say 'God is good' and 'God does answer, this is a miracle' and 'we are praying for you'

Do you really think that if the first person prayed hard enough, her baby would've survived? Or if not, and it's just chance, why pray?

I believe in God by the way. I have been studying for a while and seem to lean towards Judaism but notice a lot of 'God is good, he answered my prayers. It's a miracle'

Why some prayers and not others? Why do people think He's helped you get a job offer you really wanted but not answered a woman across the road's prayer not to be raped?

There is suffering throughout the Bible. Jesus himself suffered according to the Bible. That's not what I mean - I mean specially, why some prayers can be answered and not others that are equally in need?

Really? Who created that rule that telling a woman calm down is misogynistic? Explain to me why it is misogynistic. I happily tell man, woman, child and dog to calm down and no one will impose some made up rule that saying calm down is misogynistic.

Now everything is misogynistic, word salad, narcissistic, rude, and other arbitrary diagnosis and made up rules by some people who make themselves creator, judge and jury of the rules of engagement.

Please, just calm yourself right down.

You are showing who you are very clearly here.

I am very calm, the other poster you are responding to is also coming across as very calm

Calm, calm, calm 😂

I think it’s ok to be impassioned. Passion is energy. Feel the power that comes from focusing on what excites you.

I love God and that’s why I’m impassioned to discuss god-related matters.

@Maximinimalist has tried to enlighten you that “You do realise that the UK legal system is based heavily on the Old Testament. Where do you think the ideas of morality and right and wrong originated?

You have most likely obeyed God’s laws in ignorance. I’m surprised that you would be happy not knowing where the laws you hold dearly come from. I thought you said you were a critical thinker?

I see God’s laws as patents. As the creator, God still holds those patents, even if they’ve been influenced and adopted by human law makers. But the buck stops with God.

You are not the authority to know whether or not god exists for absolute certainty. You believe god doesn’t exist, but you don’t know either way for certainty. Knowing you don’t know is ok - it’s a wise, humble and honest position.

“Science doesn’t have the processes to prove or disprove the existence of God. Science studies and attempts to explain only the natural world while God, in most religions, is supernatural.”

I am the authority to know that Gods doesn’t exist in my life so the buck doesn’t stop with him. I’m not so weak as to be indoctrinated. We met a couple of LDS when we were in America recently - scary how such young girls were brainwashed. They totally couldn’t (or wouldn’t?) understand why people wanted same sex marriages.

I’m showing myself to be who? Someone who says calm down and who will not accept someone’s arbitrary labelling of what I said as misogynistic?

Who are you showing yourself to be? Do you realise people can disagree with you and that pointed disagreement is neither rude nor misogynistic? If someone refuses to accept sone arbitrary labelling of their motives, do you realise that’s okay too?

When someone disagrees with you, it is not an affront.

Touché. You cannot (and will not) understand why people have faith. Instead, you rudely call them “so weak as to be indoctrinated”.

And you don’t realise the buck stops with God, like it or not, because God is immortal and you are not.

Serious question. Does this aversion to God stem from issues with authority?

And you cannot or will not understand that no matter how many times you tell us that God can punish us, God has authority Iover us etc etc if someone doesn't believe in God then that's totally irrelevant to us.

Not believing in God has nothing to do with issues with authority, when its something I don't believe in it cannot have authority.

How he can have an aversion to your god whom he does not believe in? That’s nonsensical.

Sorry, I don’t know if the poster is a he, as it could well be a she. Either way, my same point still stands.

Blueisthecolour1 · 01/01/2023 20:10

Surely the most accurate response to these types of spiritual musings is that we don’t know!! None of us have the answers either way. I think it’s strange that most folk sit so determinedly on one side of the fence; they tend to be staunch believers or certain that there’s nothing. Both are quite arrogant stances IMHO - given that we know nothing, & can prove nothing either way

Sevensilverrings · 01/01/2023 20:16

I’m sure someone’s beaten me to it, but I’d recommend Tim Minchin’s song ‘thank you god’ to tackle this particular question. Easy to Google, on YouTube too.

That's the pickle.of it all, humans are the creators I the idea of God, therefore the whole thing could be a construct, and in all likely hood of them a being with such powers as God did exist, then it's time for a cuppa and see what God would really think

JustAnotherPoster00 · 01/01/2023 20:29

May i suggest the first hour of the movie zeitgeist because it deals well with the similarities of gods throughout the ages

You believe he exists and I don’t. You can let him have authority over you but I don’t. God obviously plays a part of your life, he doesn’t exist in mine.

And if I turn around and say the only authority is the devil, God doesnt exist but the devil has authority over you whether you believe that or not, are you okay with that?

But you don’t know if “he” is true, which means that not believing in “him” definitely means “he” has zero authority over you.

What nonsense. This god you talk of, has absolutely no authority of me.

Firstly if the being existed then God would be an Extraterrestrial, then secondly we only believe that such a being exists, based on the books written and translated by people in the past, therefore all human creation and information based

So basically you are saying because I don't believe in God I sound like a child with developmental issues

Really? Wow

I take it, we are supposed to bow down to a human concept and creation and believe in a mythical being?

here's a question, if god would bleed, does that mean it could die?

But if He is true, which He is, then whether you believe it or not, doesnt stop God having authority over you.

But that's just something you believe.

Someone else might fervently believe the world was created by a snake-like creature living in the earth's core. That creature, imagined by that human, means nothing to anyone else (no matter how much the believer truly believes). And if millions of people believed in that creature over thousands of years, well, it would still just be a belief, someone else's belief, and have no bearing over anyone else.

Similarly, the whole 'but no one knows so you shouldn't be so certain about your beliefs'. At what point can we say, no, that's too far-fetched? Again, if thousands of years had been spent worshipping an ethereal snake-like being at the earth's core (that we apparently shouldn't test or question), would we need to accept that as a real possibility?

Fascinating discussion btw.
