I’m not a big fan of Hogmanay, I think it because I like starting the new year with a clear head but I love a nice day on the 1st…

Growing up we always got together with family, their was a big fancy dinner, starter crackers etc and everyone got dressed up.

I’ve tried to capture this with my own family but it always seems to fall short of my expectations, I’m not sure if it’s because unlike Christmas their are no gifts to look forward to or mantle I just put too much pressure on it but now the DC are older tween/teens maybe it’s time to start some new traditions for the day.

Tell me your NYD plans and traditions, what do you eat, wear, do?

We usually have a chilled out day followed by a fancy dinner in the evening. This year I'm doing a triathlon followed by fancy dinner in the evening!

Crackstone · 30/12/2022 13:20

Our closest oldest friends are coming to stay. I’m looking forward to just sitting chatting, drinking and eating nice food by the fire.

We have a curry on NYE, either restaurant or take out, eat about 7pm, so always home about 9pm if eating out, then chill and watch TV.

I won't stay up for the bells at midnight but I will set an alarm to get up early and go for a walk. There's a bench at the top of the hill where I will sit and watch the sunrise.

Fuwari · 30/12/2022 13:46

I hate staying up until midnight (most nights in bed by 9pm!) and for what? Just to say happy new year. We celebrated New Years in Tokyo a few years back and when I was wishing everyone happy new year, it was the afternoon here! So last year I started a new thing. We watch a live stream from Japan and celebrate at their midnight (3pm) with a cup of sake. Then we play board games and have a Japanese dinner (this year Japanese curry). Last year we watched a Japanese movie but this year we’re watching the last episode of Alice in Borderland (Japanese show) as we wanted to watch it all together while DD is home from Uni. DD will actually go out with friends afterwards. We really like it as it’s a way to celebrate together. No sitting up clock watching waiting for midnight to come, to then feel what was the point!

Ultimately the whole world goes into 2023 at different times so it really doesn’t matter at what time you celebrate it or wish someone a happy new year.

mincepiesandi · 30/12/2022 13:47

Watching with interest as we don't usually do anything at all. Don't even usually stay awake till midnight!

Whycanineverever · 30/12/2022 13:47

We are taking part in the London New Years day parade again - we haven't done it since pre covid.

Will be fun but my oldest has declared she is too old to do it so just me and the pre teen.

itneverstopsraining · 30/12/2022 13:51

We are all peopled out after a wedding and hectic Christmas.

We'll stay up to the bells, open all the windows at midnight and have a huge steak pie for our dinner on the 1st.

A mountain walk. Tomorrow its 4 mountains with friends at 8am. Ill be back by noon and ill have a walk with DH down the beach. Kids won’t bother. DS is 14 and its difficult getting him to do things with parents!

rainbowstardrops · 31/12/2022 08:08

When my parents were still here, we'd often go for a lovely walk along the seafront but that's all changed now sadly.
So New Year's Day, we usually take the tree and the decorations down! Can't do that this year though (next year!) because DS's girlfriend is staying over and I wouldn't subject her to that mess 😂

AceofPentacles · 31/12/2022 08:24

We usually do a big clean and tidy and put all decorations away on nye ready for a fresh start nyd. Remember not to do any laundry on New Year's Day in case you wash someone out of your life (old superstition).

ilovebagpuss · 31/12/2022 08:24

Nothing much NYE with kids became a buffet tea and karaoke with games etc and a few glasses of fizz for the adults. Sometimes we meet up with our friends and do the same version but with more of us.

It's usually good fun and can turn into a kitchen disco.

NY Day we don't do anything special, we never did the second Christmas meal type affair in our families. Maybe a roast if anyone can be bothered or a walk if weather OK.

Haruka · 31/12/2022 09:23

Given that NYD will be one of only two dry days this week according to the weather forecast, I'll have to do my laundry no matter what.

hopeishere · 31/12/2022 09:27

We are hoping to do out for an early dinner today. DH is sick. DS2 on antibiotic. DS1 said he didn't fell well last night. Last few days have been... trying.

I'm planning for her up early tomorrow and get the decorations down! I'm back in work on Wednesday so want it done by then.

Haruka · 31/12/2022 09:34

On a less controversial note, I will be painting a significant picture for my living room today. Given the semi-occult nature of the image it's rather fitting to do it over the New Year changeover days. I will even try to add some glow in the dark elements to it!

A fondue with garlic dough balls to ring the year out, and, showing my European origins here, watching Dinner for One, as is tradition in many European countries (heaven knows why).

Blissmiss · 31/12/2022 09:38

@itneverstopsraining This is us. A hectic run up to Christmas including a wedding and family events on Xmas eve, Xmas Day and Boxing Day, and Xmas Eve (show ajd dinner) means that the idea of a family dinner on NY is an absolute no no. A nice dog walk will
bs about it for us. At this stage of the year,

Taytocrisps · 31/12/2022 10:09

I'm meeting up with my Dad, my sister, her partner and one or two family friends and we're going for a Chinese meal in a restaurant.
