British Gas account in credit - should I claim it back?

Monthly payment is around £230 and account is in credit by £1400.

Should I leave it where it is or just leave 2 months worth in there and get the rest back? Clueless with this stuff!

I'd ask for it back on principle and stick it in savings albeit shit rate. Use that to pay. Can you imagine how much interest the gas companies make with lots of people being in credit! If nothing else I'd want to stop that...they get enough profit as it is

I don't think energy companies are allowed to earn credit on customer balances.

I meant interest of course, not credit d'oh!

I was fooled by their billing system this month. Over £600 credit according to statement. Phoned to reduce DDebit a bit, person on phone did not say “oh, but we’ve just taken £500 from that”. Signed up online this morning, statements do not match the paper statement I was sent, in any way at all.
So I’m sat with a paper statement that says my DD is enough to cover the forecast usage while the screen in front of me says “you are not paying enough”. No sign of the reduction agreed on the phone.
I think the lack of transparency is deliberate. They are utterly mendacious twats.
