Electric Meter Question... Please help.

I will begin by saying that I know very little about meters.. My son who has special needs lives in a flat. One bedroom, kitchen, bathroom, sitting room. He came home on Dec 19th for Christmas... He had £55 on the meter when he left. He turned the radiators off. He left the tv and sky box on and a fridge freezer and under counter freezer..
He got home today and no lights. He checked the meter and was £1.20 in debit..
I know electric prices have gone up but does this sound right or should we get the meter checked? Fully prepared to be told its normal but wanted to check before I speak to letting agent...

Doesn't sound right.

My neighbour is away travelling for 6 months and I'm keeping eye on house etc. Reasonably sized 4-bed semi and I've put heating on low for an hour in the morning while it's cold to keep damp/chill out, fridge/freezer on (handy for us over Christmas!), telephone answering machine on, radio on a timer (comes on R4 few hours in evening!). Last meter reading for a month was around £1 day.

Thank you... Will speak to his support manager and get him to speak to the letting agent..

Just spoke to my friend who was keeping an eye on the meter. There was £20 in there yesterday... Clearly something wrong...

How certain is he that it had £55? Is it possible that he misread it and it was 55p/ £5.5? Is someone else topping up the meter for him (and kept the money) or does he have access to it online to see the breakdown?

Any idea of his usual spend - obviously it is cold currently, but does he usually have heating on and spend £50 per week? Could someone have stayed in his flat with the heating on full blast, cooking roast dinners, etc, as they knew he was away?

I don't have a prepayment meter, just trying to think of possibilities.

There was £20 on the meter when out friend went in yesterday.. Def no way anyone could get in his flat... He's topped up now. Will ring letting agents in the N year.

Does he have a smart meter? That will give you a day or two's usage in money and kWh and I have online account linked to my smart meters that gives me a weeks worth of usage so you can see what days the most was spent.
Also, is he in any debt with them predating this? If you don't top up the meter may from the credit you already have depending on how it's set up (IME).

Not a smart meter I don't think... He didn't owe anything... He's with Bulb if that helps.. Thankfully they have my details and his support house details as allowed to talk on his behalf as he is deaf and can't talk on the phone.

Is there a daily standing charge?

That still doesn't explain yesterday's 20 now being spent

Elderflower14 · 28/12/2022 18:28

I know... I think there is a standing charge...

If he's with Bulb, they're in the process of moving over to Octopus so that could have something to do with it?

Alternatively, has his heating and hot water come back on somehow? For example after a week of being off, the timer settings start up again?

Standing charge is about 50 p a day, might be slightly higher for prepay, but comes off daily not in big lumps.
