lids placed upside down - careless or something else

like this ,and on other objects .Regularly.
And zero tessellation ability.

I don't understand it ,can't be absent mindedness as surely it involves choosing a placement ? A more awkward one to effect.

Do you mean when storing? I always do that as the lid is less likely to fall off or get knocked.

Dartmoorcheffy · 28/12/2022 13:04

Easier to stack. I do it with pans.

Mamamia7962 · 28/12/2022 13:05

Dartmoor - Yes so do I.

purplecorkheart · 28/12/2022 13:05

Less likely to get knocked off and damaged in the case of the picture you put up. Things like saucepan more efficient storage

thelobsterquadrille · 28/12/2022 13:05

I always do it in cupboards as it means you can fit more in, and things are less likely to tumble off the top.

Theheartmustpausetobreathe · 28/12/2022 13:06

No ,items in use .We have a red silicone cat food tin cover .It has a little knob on top ,is placed with the knob down sticking into the cat food .
I don't understand it .

Your use is a sensible idea with a reason .

Who is it that’s doing it? DH or annoying teen trying to wind you up?

AlisonDonut · 28/12/2022 13:08

So that it annoys you so much that you don't ask them to do the thing any more?

Seeingadistance · 28/12/2022 13:22

I’ve looked up tessellation (thank you for introducing me to a new word!) but I don’t see the relevance here.

Could this be dementia-related? The kind of thing that could be an early sign, or part of the progression of dementia.

Theheartmustpausetobreathe · 28/12/2022 15:51

It doesn't annoy me ,I'm just really puzzled by it. Person is in early 70s so maybe it is connected to cognitive issues .

I've just googled tessellation and see it refers to 2 d objects fitting together .I've always taken it to mean placing 3 d items so that they fit neatly together .You know ,like when you pack your shopping neatly into the bag .I mention it because he seems to have no concept that when stacking something -eg saucepans -that it's usual to put the big ones at the bottom with the smaller things on top.Just thought it was similar behaviour .

Is this new behaviour or something the person has always done?

CaptainMyCaptain · 28/12/2022 15:57

Dartmoorcheffy · 28/12/2022 13:04

So do I.

Theheartmustpausetobreathe · 28/12/2022 17:53

There's not enough height in our cupboard to stack pans with their lids on .Lids are kept separately

@pinneddownbytabbies - I'd say it's relatively new .(are those tabbies acting as furry hot water bottles ?) .

Hmm. If it's new behaviour I'd be concerned I think. It does seem an odd thing to do consistently - if it was random you'd expect things to be the right way up approx half the time, I guess?
Is the bad stacking new behaviour too?

AlisonDonut · 28/12/2022 18:13

I just did what you have done with the first picture and asked my OH as we have the exact same pot, and he said he wouldn't think anything of it as he doesn't use the salt. But if I kept doing it he'd think I was trying to make a point or something.

Theheartmustpausetobreathe · 28/12/2022 19:49

Bad stacking not new .

Any issues with their hands as I can imagine its easier to hook a finger in the lip than it is the grip the knob if you have arthritis?

Theheartmustpausetobreathe · 29/12/2022 09:52

No ,no dexterity issues .I think it's just a quirk ,some spatial recognition difficulty.

Last night we had a veggie pastry pie which I had served in the usual manner of cutting out triangular wedges .Helping himself to more he started half way down a triangle side and cut horizontally into the pie to cut a rectangle .

It's not a problem ,I just find it strange .
