Covid - is there a really awful varient at the moment?

Ive caught covid again and i feel like death.

Previous 2 covid infections were ok. First one was just a low level cold, 2nd one was sore throat and tiredness. But this time ive been properly knocked out.

So is there a really awful varient at the moment? Or is it that all my immunity from vaccinations and previous infections has vanished so I've been hit with a full whack?

Note of warning, it takes about 2 months to properly recover from covid, 2 friends told me who had omicron this spring. I definitely feel not myself and taking Actimel daily

Are you sure? I mean l last had it in May but l was fine after a week.

Actually I’m going on what they both told me so have no idea if it’s true but I’ve certainly felt not brilliant.

Apparently, the Omicron BA.5 (the latest sub variant) is worse than the Omicron variants that went before. It’s said to be similar to the first UK variant Delta. That fits with what my DH and I have just had. We were so ill with it. 6 weeks on and I’m still not over it. Still a bad chest, cough and fatigue.

That’s interesting.

Another horrid symptom I had was not being able to get to sleep properly despite being knackered.

I was very lucky I had family come over and drop off food or cooked it and left it downstairs as I live by myself and could barely get up apart from to feed the cat and let it out, for a few days of being sick.

Underroad · 28/12/2022 18:10

I’ve had covid 4 times. The first time it presented as a very strange stomach upset followed by a fever and shortness of breath. The other 3 times have been nastily flu-ey with the Delta variant being the worst. I last had it in September and it was vile but the main symptoms only lasted a week which was better compared to the other times. The fatigue afterwards wasn’t as bad as the other times either.

Currently have the awful flu that so many people have. I’m on day 11 and I can’t believe I am still so ill.

My main symptom was stomach issues too. Mildly scratchy throat which went after a day and 2 weeks of nausea and horrible stomach pains.

Blanketenvy · 28/12/2022 20:36

I feel absolutely dreadful. Tested positive yesterday. I had it back in 2020. Thought I might get away with more of a mild cold this time but feel like death. Feel really sick, totally congested, splitting headache and joint pain, temp up and down. Have not been able to get out of bed really atall today. Totally miserable experience.

Blanketenvy · 28/12/2022 20:41

Previously had 3 jabs but hadn't had my booster this year as was really ill after the last one. So I'm guessing my immunity is pretty low. The only saving grace (so far) is that with previous infection I really struggled with my breathing, and so far just have an intermittent cough this time but it's early days.

SouperNoodle · 28/12/2022 20:52

I've had covid twice previously and both were a bit crap but this latest one (my third time) has been awful. I was bed bound for 5 days and had to call in favours for childcare.
My poor kids lived on nuggets and chips, pasta and pesto and wraps because DH had to do their dinners every night and he has zero cooking skills.

This variant feels waayyyy worse.

I also had to sleep sitting up because breathing wasn't great

Family members have it but not awful symptoms, the vaccinated and boosted ones are feeling a lot worse than those who are not.....there will be more on the way now that china has let people travel and i doubt no checks before entering the uk as usual !

Can I ask how people know which variant they have?

Can’t imagine many/any do….

BaublesandBangles · 28/12/2022 21:15

I found this time no where near as bad as the last time I had it. Was over it in a week.

Kualma · 28/12/2022 21:20

I had covid about a month ago and it wasn’t bad. I was fine after a week (not trying to brag - just talking about my experience)

tobee · 28/12/2022 21:23

I had it first time beginning of December. (All of us first timers in our household) All found it mild. And over in a few days. Dh had his booster 4 weeks before and I had mine 3 weeks before. But dc hadn't had theirs. All of us the same. Dh is cev and immunocompromised but was mild for him too. He didn't get treatment although likely eligible.

From our small sample it seems that there are still so many unknowns about how it affects people.

BaublesandBangles · 28/12/2022 21:24

Most people I know who have had covid recently have said it was just like a cold.

Stillwearingskinnies · 28/12/2022 21:40

Never had it before.
I was feeling a bit rough on the 15th Dec & got sent home from work. Tested positive on the 16th. I've never felt so ill. Basically spent 10 days in bed with a cold, cough, breathlessness, headache, fatigue, raised heart rate, an awful feeling of sadness but the worse part was the nausea. I couldn't eat for days. I felt absolutely dreadful & could barely get myself to the bathroom. We had to postpone Christmas with family until today.
I feel considerably better but hosting for 8 today has completely wiped me out again.
(All vaccinations had btw).

VeronicaFranklin · 28/12/2022 21:44

I've been poorly since 16th Dec, went out for a meal for my DH birthday and it was the last thing I tasted. I have had no sense of smell or taste since...(rendered my xmas dinner pointless!) I've also had 1 night of chills/sweats, a cough, some wheezing and some mucus. Now it's just like a lingering cough and extreme tiredness but it won't shift and still no sense of smell or taste. I've had flu before which was much worse than this (I couldn't get out of bed with the flu). I've tested for Covid and all negative. Someone said there's a bad flu going around and some virus. So who know's! Hoping it clears up soon as it's miserable especially with a 6 month old baby to entertain at the same time!

CockSpadget · 28/12/2022 22:07

DP and me had covid a couple of weeks ago, we’ve both had it a few times, the first time in 2020 when we weren’t vaxxed was definitely the worst. The 2nd time I was pretty much symptomless, but this time was pretty bad. The headache was awful and didn’t go for 4 days solid. All the normal symptoms were gone after a week but have been left with horrendous fatigue, and arms and legs that feel like they are made of lead.

Tulipvase · 28/12/2022 22:38

My husband tested positive on the Saturday before Christmas. He has been Ill ever since. It is his first time Of getting a positive test (has a job that still requires him to test). He has been much sicker than either me or my youngest who have had it twice.

CovidGrumble · 29/12/2022 12:54

Ive just woken up. Haven't slept solidly all through the night and day like that for years. But I'm feeling better. Cough is still rumbling but my fever seems to have gone. Just feels like a nasty cold now, low level headache, throat a bit sore, cough cough cough.

I’ve been in bed for nearly 2 weeks apart from Xmas Eve and Xmas day where I felt I was improving but then went downhill again on Boxing Day. Covid tests are all negative though. 🤷‍♀️ But I’ve never felt so bad. Went out for a bit this morning as needed more ibuprofen, etc and am now back in bed.

Petronus · 28/12/2022 14:03

I’ve had this too. Over two weeks now and the cough is just relentless - So so tired.

Probably is flu. Cases of influenza A are high. I read on here that the vaccine has been less successful against influenza A, (more successful against B) so cases of A are spreading widely.

The tests are not all that reliable now. I tested negative for the first few days and then tested with Flowflex and I was positive.
Still not back to normal over three weeks later.

CovidGrumble · 29/12/2022 13:16

Ah, my covid test was immediate thick red line on lft. Dh has now tested positive too. Both dc are now coughing & snotting a bit but their tests this morning were negative.

Yeah I've been testing every 2/3 days. I suspect it prob is covid variant that the tests aren't picking up. So many people I know now have same symptoms as me!

Yeah mine was the same an immediate almost black line. Feel absolutely dreadful still and not got out of bed still but on the plus side no breathing problems like with my previous bout.
