Train strikes in January

AutisticLegoLover · 28/12/2022 12:12

Google tells me there are strikes on the 5th but searching for trains via the app or desktop site tells me there's no trains on the 4th either. Is the app at fault or are there no trains running on the 4th? Thanks.

I think they strike the whole week 😕

roselune · 28/12/2022 12:15

There are strikes on Tuesday 3rd as well and usually the day right after strikes is disrupted at least in the morning because the trains are apparently in the wrong place.

ThorFull · 28/12/2022 12:16

My train app says all week.
Hoping the buses will be tolerable. I can’t afford another week off. Thankfully kids are off so I can afford the extra travel time next week.

Ted27 · 28/12/2022 12:17

They are on strike 3,4,5,6 and 7 Jan

I'm.at a station now trying to get to London, our booked train was so rammed we couldn't get on. Its chaos.
We are going to Edinburgh next week - booked flights.

ThorFull · 28/12/2022 12:17

Ah I wondered why the morning after was always disrupted too. Makes sense if the train is in Manchester when it should be in Cardiff!

NeedWineNow · 28/12/2022 12:19

There are train strikes Tuesday to Saturday next week.

AutisticLegoLover · 28/12/2022 12:20

Thank you. What a pain!

It's often to do with staffing as well. Drivers are often lodged for early trains but they cannot lodge on a strike day, so early trains that haven't got based drivers won't be able to run.

AutisticLegoLover · 28/12/2022 12:45

I was hoping for a day out with the dc next week too and now can't as I don't drive. Bugger.

As far as I remember there were planned strikes for 3rd and 4th, and 6th and 7th . 1st and 2nd Jan are bank hols so likely a reduced or limited service then anyway. Then they announced the 5th as an additional strike day at a later date (I think it might be a different union on the 5th) Then 8th likely disrupted as the day after a strike often is. Lots to look forward to if you need to travel by train

It’s like the trains aren’t running in the U.K. anymore. Personally don’t care too much as can work from home, but think the strikes hits those who can’t unfairly and the government won’t do anything so I think it’s for nothing too.

Yes, I'm self employed and already lost £££, not to mention the many, many hours of time I've had to spend taking alternative routes or leaving the house at 6am to still get to my workplace on time. Next week is going to be the same. At least there's no snow this time...

jevoudrais · 29/12/2022 09:20

I work in London but thankfully in the kind of job where my employer fully accepts I can't get there if trains are not running, and I am a hybrid worker anyway.

Horrendous for those who need to be on site to work and can't just not get to work eg. Emergency service staff. I've zero sympathy for the train strikes after they did things like target Glastonbury and Xmas. They come across as total bastards.

Brrrrrrrrrrrr · 29/12/2022 09:25

This country is fucked. Strike after strike after strike.

The government could do something if they wanted to. It's not for nothing, it's showing everyone how utterly useless this government is.

Plumbear2 · 29/12/2022 09:27

I am sed to support the strikes when it was for a couple of days. Next week is just ridiculous.

Youngatheart00 · 29/12/2022 09:34

How long is this going to go on for? Surely there has to be some compromise especially now inflation is slowing/stabilising and the service does need to modernise. I do respect their right to strike but the unions seem completely intransigent and there have been so many days lost to strikes already.

Fizbosshoes · 29/12/2022 09:36

The hardest hit will likely be the ones on minimum wage or not much above - like retail, hospitality, carers, cleaners etc - who can't wfh.

but how are the lowest paid railworkers managing with this many days of strikes?(presuming they don't get paid for strike days)

silverclock222 · 29/12/2022 09:38

We have a couple of days away planned and trains are off both days so we've booked the coach. Less than half the price and likely more comfortable. Actually looking forward to it. Scotrail - be careful what you wish for.

Seeline · 29/12/2022 09:47

My student DS has booked a coach to return to uni but needs a train to get to the coach station....

Scotrail are not striking

No they don't get paid. There are plenty of railway workers on the low end of the scale losing hundreds over these strikes and struggling, as if the hardship isn't bad enough the hatred towards them is sickening.

Shades of Winter of Discontent 2

This will all get sorted eventually but at what cost to the country!

Inflation kept rising after WoD 1 in 78/79 and the GE in 79 was interesting

Businesses are going to go to the wall with the associated fall out of the current situation and CV19

My guess is that early in the New Year there will be co-ordinated rolling strikes coupled with the rising mortgage rates, we are in for a bumpy ride and a reality check for people who stretched themselves too far

Repossessions will also go up at the years end as people struggle to keep a roof over their head, pay the bills and feed themselves

I fully understand the need for a pay rise but the money has to come from somewhere unless you borrow more and go further into debt 😳

LlynTegid · 29/12/2022 10:33

Some services will be running and so a day out with your DC may be an option. Or somewhere you can go to by bus.

Check the train operator.
