Can you get a prescription changed to a different pharmacy without GP involvement?

DD2 is staying with us for Christmas. She has just realised she has run out of her medication (antidepressants) and that the medication repeat will have been sent to her usual pharmacist. Her GP is awful. They don't call back when they say they will. Don't answer the phone half the time she calls and many other issues. Calling the GP is really not going to do much. She is due to return on the 1st and we don't have the time it will take her gp to get a turnaround for her prescription.

Our usual pharmacists are actually pretty good. Would it be possible for them to request the prescription from the other pharmacist for dd to get her medication? Or is this a complete no go and will she just have to wait for the last 6days until she can get to the pharmacist?

She might be able to get a prescription sent by calling 111.

Yes, try Boots online - I've found them very good.

She could pop in to the local pharmacy with her tablets and the box they were dispensed in, see what they say. They can signpost the correct route, I expect.

You can phone the pharmacy it would have been sent too and ask them to return it to the spine then that prescription can be located at another pharmacy with the details of the patient. A lot easier to find if you know the nhs number.

RLOU30 · 27/12/2022 21:26

Yes I done this recently. You phone up the current pharmacy the prescription is with and they will give you a code like number to give to your new pharmacy so that they can recall it. That’s what I did anyway good luck!

Thank you, everyone

we will try our local pharmacist in the morning and see if they can help with it all. I wasn't sure if it was a complete no go to ask and as they really are pretty good I didn't want to make them feel bad.

DD2 smiled very relieved it might be possible to sort out :)
she thankfully knows her NHS number.

I work in a pharmacy and the above is how we would suggest doing it or they may be able to give you the prescription barcode over the phone

Your local pharmacy will give you advice…it involves getting a code from original pharmacy so that local pharmacy can locate the prescription. Sorry about the vagueness 🤦‍♀️

Most pharmacies will give you a few days supply of meds like antidepressants in an emergency if you take along some proof like box with current label, prescription slip or screenshot of pharmacy app order

toomuchfaster · 27/12/2022 21:35

You need to ring her pharmacy and get them to release back to the spine first.
Then take either the barcode (unique to the prescription) or her NHS number (unique to her) to a local pharmacy.
Some pharmacies will do an emergency supply with just her NHS number.

Thank you everyone both pharmacies were really helpful and dd2 has her meds and feeling happier
