Ford Kuga or Audi Q5

NeedAHoliday2021 · 27/12/2022 18:58

Looking at 2-3 year old used cars. We’d plan to buy outright and use for 10-12 years or more. We’ve had a VW touran and currently have a Ford SMax. Both were great cars but the Ford is more comfortable. We’re ready for a smaller car (don’t need 7 seats but still need to fit 3 small teens/adults along the back seat and fit dog in the boot)

we’re considering the Ford kuga new style or the Audi Q5/A4 avant.

Is the audi worth the extra £10k or are you just playing for the badge? I want something comfy and reliable so would the kuga fit that and leave us with 10k for a holiday… or should we go for the Audi because we’ll really notice the higher quality? (I’m not convinced we will but happy to be wrong).

I don’t really know either, but my experience of Audi is very expensive servicing.

NeedAHoliday2021 · 27/12/2022 19:08

@Bluevelvetsofa that’s what I’m wondering. Our Ford smax has been reasonable re parts and servicing.

Not sure how common it is but friend with Audi has been targeted for theft, which would put me off a bit. We currently have a Ford EcoSport and big fans, on that basis I vote for the Ford!

Have you looked at tiguan?

KendrickLamaze · 27/12/2022 19:12

I think fords are cheaper and more plastic on the inside than most manufacturers. I say that as a ford owner and it's the only downside to my car so far. Saying that, only the most modern Audis aren't cheap and plastic inside.

Is it worth the extra? Probably not but which do you feel happier in?

Warspite · 27/12/2022 19:14

Audi Audi Audi every time.
They’re no comparison.
We had a Kuga.
Love our Audi.

ABrotherWhoLooksLikeHellMugYou · 27/12/2022 19:15

DP says the Audi isn't worth the extra and the parts and servicing will also be massively more costly.

My only opinion about cars is whether they're reliable and affordable so on that basis I'd choose the Ford.

Bamaluz · 27/12/2022 19:15

As a pp asks, have you looked at a Tiguan?
It has been recommended to me by quite a few people who know about cars.

Bard6817 · 27/12/2022 19:16

I had an a5 - best car i ever had. Fords, Renaults, Bmw, Rover, Nissan.

Now have a Qashqai…. They broke a connector on the oil filter, now comes loose without warning. Nissan say £850 to fix. A friend used F1 wire to hold it in place, freebie.

Audi never tried to screw me like that.

Had a last minute emergency with my Audi, day before a driving holiday, fixed it same day for me.

I suspect, once you experience Audi, you’ll never want to go back.

Depreciation rate is lower, because it’s simply a better built vehicle, as determined by the leasing companies who largely set these market rates, because they deal in hundreds at a time and know the additional running costs of the lesser models.

DD just got rid of her Q3 for a VW T-roc, it’s a far better car all round, very comfy and more room in the back for DGS in his spinny car seat. His feet were practically on my shoulders in the Audi.

Impatientwino · 27/12/2022 19:21

I have a q5 and I absolutely love it. The boot is massive and lots of room inside but still feels compact to park. It's a fantastic drive.

It hasn't cost us a fortune in servicing or tyres over the years really and we've spent virtually nothing on unexpected repairs in over 7 years.

(It'll go wrong tomorrow now won't it!)

When we do get a new (to us) car I'll be looking for another q5 without question.

Beebumble2 · 27/12/2022 19:48

We recently went from a Landrover Freelander to a Kuga. We researched all the cars in the similar range and it came down to the Tiguan or Kuga. Not wanting to wait a year for a new car, we decided to go for a nearly new, top of the range in either model. Couldn’t find a Tiguan, but the Ford dealer found the Kuga and had it brought to their dealership.
It’s great, loads of extras such as forward and rear cameras, self park etc and very comfortable. We do a 600 mile round trip every month and still are impressed at how good it is.

FuschiaAcai · 27/12/2022 19:55

What about a Skoda SUV? Not paying for the audi badge but a cut above Ford

NeedAHoliday2021 · 27/12/2022 20:52

The Tiguan back seat and boot looked smaller than the kuga? Also the vw seats feel harder/less comfy than the Ford in my experience but if the back seat is similar size then I’d consider it.

I’d say the Kuga is roomier, I’ve just taken 4 adults on a journey, no complaints.
The Kuga boot is cavernous, we get more in it than the Freelander.

MrsPnut · 28/12/2022 18:42

Have you looked at the Kia Sportage? 7 year warranty and the inside is huge - you can easily fit 3 adults in the back seats.

I've just ordered a new car and so many I looked at were tiny inside compared to our Sportage. I did finally go for a Skoda Karoq though as my new choice.

Duchess379 · 28/12/2022 19:36

I'm looking for an SUV for my dad & I have been looking at the Ford Kuga. Ford's are much cheaper to service & run. Audi's are great but cost so much. I'd stick to the Ford...

Bluevelvetsofa · 29/12/2022 10:53

If you want a spacious boot, have a look at the Skoda Karoq. It’s a comfortable ride and the boot is massive. I loved my Karoq.

Years ago, I had an Audi TT. Apart from every male trying to burn me off at the lights, the Audi garage seemed unable to comprehend that the car was mine and insisted on speaking to DH, every time it needed a service or tyres. They even wrote to me as Mr. In 2010, two tyres were £400.

Myneedycat · 27/10/2023 11:13

I know this is an old thread, but did you buy the Kuga?

NeedAHoliday2021 · 17/01/2024 21:05

Haha @Myneedycat smax is hanging in there and we’re holding off because dh is likely to be made redundant (this has been the situation for a year now and I’m so bored of the unpredictability). I’m going to try both plus the Audi estate. I’m leaning towards the Kuga and using the money saved for a holiday.
