What to do with two teenagers at home on New Year's Eve?

DH and I are not New Year's Eve party-ers. We're quite happy to be in bed before midnight and we've got away with this with the children as they should be in bed by then too.

However, they're now 16 and 14, will definitely be up at this time and have said that they'd like to do something as a family. We're actually going out for dinner the night before so not keen to go out again. I'm wondering what we could do at home. I've no idea what people do at home with teens.

Any ideas?

Play board games? Charades? Karaoke?

What do you normally do when you spend time as a family?

You can always go to bed and leave them to watch a movie later on.

museumum · 27/12/2022 18:07

Have a fancy dinner at home really late then play card games etc. if you don’t eat till about 9 it doesn’t feel too long to wait till midnight.

ElbowsandArses · 27/12/2022 18:09

Ha. In same boat with same age kids. Just me and them. Was thinking games, snacks, film, TV, bongs, (as is the Big Ben midnight kind) and bed.

Late takeaway and games night? Covid year was the first time we were at home just as a 5 on New Year’s Eve ever, it was really quite boring compared to how we usually spend NYE 😂
we played a few games of killer (pool game), some silly board games, had a crappy buffet, watched a bit of jools Holland and I was in bed by about 12:30 as were the kids. Think DH went and lit a fire to fall asleep in front of!

CeriB82 · 27/12/2022 18:11

Take away and chill. DD is 20 and doesn’t go out drinking and DS is 14. Probably play cards, board games and have a drink.

other dd is a party girl so she’s back to her uni halls to stay for the new year and out in the city!

eddiemairswife · 27/12/2022 18:11

This is Mumsnet. You have to wear matching New Year pyjamas, drink hot chocolate and watch a New Year film,

LlynTegid · 27/12/2022 18:12

Watch a film.

Or Jools Holland if some of the line up is to your musical taste.

Findyourneutralspace · 27/12/2022 18:13

Takeaway, board games, watch Jools Holland, go outside to see the fireworks at midnight. I’d have champagne and raise a toast for 2023 - hug/kiss, make a few resolutions, sing Auld Langs Aye (or the first line and la la la the rest)
My teens would still love sparklers at midnight, but they won’t be home this year.
Then slope off to bed…

Runaround50 · 27/12/2022 18:13

Similar situation.

DD 18 will be out partying all night.
DS 14 will be at home with us. We've eaten out, then played games until 1am previously as a family. Not sure what we will do this year as a 3!

Walkingtheplank · 27/12/2022 19:03

Thanks for replies. I wasnt expecting any response.

Any ideas where to buy sparklers? That would be a good touch at midnight

FireandBrimstone · 27/12/2022 19:07

@Findyourneutralspace "Auld Langs Aye"? Hmm

Rainbowqueeen · 27/12/2022 19:14

Make mocktails
www.bbc.com/news/world-63822584.amp - do a quiz on the year 2022. This is the bbc one

Make a playlist of all the hits from the past year

Make New Year’s resolutions. - ignore the idea that they need to be worthy or things to work on. Think of it as more like a bucket list for 2023 and resolve to do something fun each that you’ve always wanted to do

Games, a film and snacky foods

Decafflatteplease · 27/12/2022 19:16

We are doing board games and a (pre ordered) takeaway. We got sparklers from the corner shop!

RudsyFarmer · 27/12/2022 19:19

I used to enjoy having a small glass of plonk with my parents as a teenager. It was kind of naughty. I can remember partaking in anything from sherry to Malibu to an eggnog 🤣

NestingSparrow · 27/12/2022 19:20

Indoor fireworks and murder in the dark.

FatOaf · 27/12/2022 19:30

Auld Langs Aye

What's that?

Bernadinetta · 27/12/2022 20:04

Auld Langs Aye

What's that?

Like you, I am completely stumped as to what this poster could mean, I simply have no clue whatsoever what she could be referring to.

OP, you could sing the popular New Year’s Eve song “Auld Lang Syne”.

Oh, hang on a minute…..

Craftybodger · 27/12/2022 20:19

Games night and favourite food. In the past we have had finger food but this year both have asked for homemade pizza.

Games we play mostly are Qwirkle and Mexican Train Dominoes.

EllaPaella · 27/12/2022 20:26

Takeaway and a movie, maybe something a bit scary. Board games or card games..
A big winner in our house this year has been the play station game 'Let's sing' which is the updated version of the old sing star, it's been a massive hit with all our kids age range 8-21!

belowfrozen · 27/12/2022 20:33

Would they get involved with cooking a three course meal together?

gogohmm · 27/12/2022 20:36

By that age we threw parties. Invited family friends with similar aged kids

I just choked on my tea!

TabithaTittlemouse · 27/12/2022 20:42

What do they want to do? Get them to organise it.

I’m usually working but we would do a buffet, drinks, music, games and ‘Auld Langs Aye’ 😂

Greyarea12 · 27/12/2022 22:13

We doing games night & party food.
