Received bank details for a bank account I don't have

I'm pretty sure this is a scam but I don't know how. I will call the bank tomorrow but just wanted some insight if anyone has experience or knowledge of this.

I've just come back home after Christmas with family to letters from 2 separate banks that I don't bank with.

First is nationwide: a statement for a FlexDirect account for December with opening and closing balance of £0.00 and a message saying 'we're sorry to see you go'. A separate letter welcomes me to digital banking with different codes to allow me to access it.

I have never had a bank account with them.

The second is from Barclays, just a pamphlet about the credit card contained within and my account number with only the last 4 digits displayed.

While I don't have a current account with them, I do have finance through them for Amazon, but I've had that for ages, never received a card for it, and the account numbers do not match.

Any ideas? I'm also worried that someone could be using my name and address to open accounts in their name, but how does that benefit them if they don't have access to the details?

That doesn't sound too good.

Can you do an online credit check now to see if anything flags up against your name?

NippyWoowoo · 27/12/2022 17:13

I meant in my name, not theirs

Definitely call and ask for their compliance department. It can be a mistake but it could also mean stolen identity.

Even if they don't have the card etc, you can go into a branch with ID and ask for funds, blocking and re-ordering cards and whatever else they try.

Keep an eye out for emails and other post you haven't seen before over the next weeks.

You need to call them as a matter of urgency.
But don't use the numbers stated in the letters or statements as these could be the fraudsters' numbers. Find them online.
Very odd.

Toooldtoworry · 27/12/2022 17:16

They intercept the post usually. Please get on credit karma (it's free) and check your credit report and then call the banks in question and report ASAP. Two separate incidents do NOT sound like an error.

TheTreeDilemma · 27/12/2022 19:27

@NippyWoowoo - have you checked your credit file online, as suggested?

Yea good point! I'll Google or see if I can find a local branch

Thanks for advice re credit karma

Agree with the others this sounds like fraud/identity theft

NippyWoowoo · 27/12/2022 20:50

Ok thanks to those suggesting credit scores. I've checked with Experian and Credit Karma and both good/excellent ratings.

There's a local Barclays in the shopping centre I'll go in tomorrow and see if I can get to a Nationwide or at the very least ring.

It's very bizarre

I don't think people meant for you to check your rating, you need to check your file to see what is on it, bank accounts in particular but also any other credit accounts that could not be you.

Yes agree your credit rating won't tell you about possible fraud...you need a credit history check. Definitely flag it up with the bank that sent you the letters

Toooldtoworry · 27/12/2022 21:14

Yes, you need to check for recently opened credit or bank accounts and see if any balances on them. If you have not opened them you need to advise the banks where the accounts have been opened.

Had something very similar happen to me
a few
years ago. The bastards had stolen my identity and were using it to open accounts and buy stuff. Definitely tell all these and your banks to put a warning note on the accounts.

11plusprep1 · 27/12/2022 22:11

This is identity theft fraud. Someone has applied current account on your name. You need to contact the bank and contact CIFAS

DelurkingAJ · 27/12/2022 22:14

The fraud I’m aware of is where they take out the credit card and transfer other balances onto it before the paperwork lands with the person whose identity has been stolen…or use the card online for the time. It’s grim. Best of luck OP.

justasking111 · 27/12/2022 22:19

We had tenants. The father, mother and daughter were all at it. Aighhh the chaos when our tenant the daughter did a flit. The post piled

justasking111 · 27/12/2022 22:21

Post piled up, new tenant had problems. I contacted everyone who had written for money telling them what had been going on.

I should have guessed she was getting new phones with new numbers regularly

Clymene · 27/12/2022 22:27

This happened to me once. They ca. put a flag against your name to stop them opening more stuff. It's a real pain.

Ah! Ok sorry I feel a bit ditzy. No new accounts have been opened (yet). I will get on it tomorrow and keep an eye out for anything else suspicious.

Annoyingly Royal Mail has been so bad around my area that I only get a pile of letters about every 3 weeks. But I will keep checking the credit report

Holy shit. This is what I'm worried about. I'll definitely explain to them that this is my concern, thank you
