Are there any doctors on here? Worried about colonoscopy prep

I've been referred to gastroenterology due to a few bouts of rectal bleeding and high inflammation in my stools, with suspected IBD. I'm expecting that they will say I need a colonoscopy, but I'm really worried about the prep as when I have had diarrhoea in the past I have fainted (I think it's a vasovagal reaction to too much 'activity' happening in my digestive system). I'm really worried about the colonoscopy prep, and worried that I'll get the stomach cramps, cold sweat and sense of doom I have before I faint. It's the worst feeling in the world.

I'm just wondering if there are any doctors on here who may be able to advise? I'll bring it up with the gastroenterologist but I'm expecting them to say there's nothing they can do and I'll just have to get on with it (which I will if I'm told to do so), or whether there's anything they can do to mitigate it or do instead of the colonscopy prep? I'd happily fast for a week if it meant avoiding that feeling :(

I didn't get the awful cold sweats and horrendous stomach with the prep, just lots of poos until it was literally just fluid coming out. Sore bum hole was worse. Sudocrem and moist wipes were my friends. I'm due a follow up one this year.

@boxingdayy

I work in a hospital and have in a previous role been a procedure scheduled for things like colonoscopies.

Given your history of fainting ask your GP to request you have this as an inpatient and the bowel prep is given to you on the ward the day before the procedure with full nursing back up.

I've worked for 3 different trusts and they all do this so please ask ❤️ hope it goes ok x

@Mabelface That's reassuring that you didn't experience those symptoms, hopefully I'll be the same!

@OhIdoLike2bBesideTheSeaside I'll mention this in my appointment, I'm worried about having it done inpatient though as will I have access to my own loo? I've heard you need to basically camp out in the bathroom during the prep

@boxingdayy
If we booked patients in they are usually given side rooms on wards that are en-suite
Alternatively they can do a scan with contrast dye which you could also discuss with them.
