Would you expect something to accompany your Camembert?

Xmas dinner in the pub. The whole meal was a disappointment to be honest but the real kicker was the Camembert which was served with . . . Nothing!
Just a lump of melted cheese and a fork to eat it with 🤔

When I asked if it came with bread they just pointed out that it didn't mention it on the menu. Well it didn't but since when was it just served with a fork?!
Am I just not experienced enough in the cheese area?

£66pp seems pretty high to me.But then again I'm not one of the big earners here Grin

CaptainMyCaptain · 27/12/2022 07:27

I love camembert but couldn't eat it without bread.

It’s a lot for a shit meal.

My point being - it was probably shit because it was cheap.
It's a lot for a meal on any other day, but £66 each is v cheap for Christmas Day. You get what you pay for.

£75/adult, £50/child isn’t in the realms of top restaurant prices, but for a pub, it’s not cheap. And, regardless, a baked Camembert should be served with something else, whatever the price.

It was £75 a head for adults and £35 for children. I don't think that is cheap. This place isn't super posh but it isn't a dive either. It is a nice family pub.

If it had been an okay meal, I wouldn't have batted an eye lid for the price.

Everyone was served at the same time and others were asking for bread so they didn't run out, they never planned to provide it.

YANBU I would have expected crusty bread, a garnish of either salad/rocket/watercress, and a sauce of some description onion marmalade, Cumberland or cranberry sauce. Very odd just to serve baked cheese, without anything else on the plate. How was the dish described on the menu?

KatherineJaneway · 27/12/2022 08:05

I'd write an honest review on trip advisor.

Roselilly36 · 27/12/2022 08:07

Re-read your post just see it said baked Camembert only how odd, sounds like they have lost a customer for next year.

Hopeful16 · 27/12/2022 08:12

I would also have been disappointed with not being served bread to accompany soup!

LizzieSiddal · 27/12/2022 08:14

I’d email them before leaving a review. Say you were really disappointed and it’s a shame as you enjoyed last years. Give them a chance to put things right.

LizzieSiddal · 27/12/2022 08:15

And posters saying they would have expected veg or chunks of meat?!

What fresh hell is this?

EspeciallyD · 27/12/2022 08:19

Reminds me of the time I ordered a prawn salad in a pub and was served a plate of shredded iceberg lettuce with a pile of prawns on top. No dressing and when I asked I was met with genuine astonishment, they eventually came back with some sachets of salad cream.

Ive been to places that serve chopped carrot/cucumber etc with a baked Camembert (alongside bread)… it’s not that weird? I’d expect chopped meat with a fondue or raclette rather than with Camembert though.

LizzieSiddal · 27/12/2022 08:57

@WaddleAway thanks, I’ve never seen that, only ever had bread/crackers/grape/apple/pickles.

Lulu1919 · 27/12/2022 09:02

Bread usually
If at home ...celery or little new potatoes is my go to !
NEVER alone

we paid £400 to feed 4 adults and 2 kids and no one enjoyed their meal

£400 isn't a lot for 6 people for lunch on Christmas Day tbh.

Nearly £70 a head is a lot !!!

hopeishere · 27/12/2022 09:16

Was it warm with a raspberry coulis? I've had that a million times as a starter (very 90s) and recently in a posh-ish place and it didn't come with bread. I've never seen it served with bread as a starter. If it was part of a cheese course then different.

Pate with a sliver of bread does my head in though!!

hopeishere · 27/12/2022 09:17

Ignore me. I thought it was Brie.

user1471505356 · 27/12/2022 09:34

Very unbritish no to have bread or crackers, in France I was given a knife and forf for the cheese nothing else.

On any other day, yes. Not on Christmas Day. It's £150ish pp round here.

UnicornMadeOfPinkGlitter · 27/12/2022 10:47

Our local pub serves the baked Camembert with different breads and then celery carrot sticks cucumber and grapes.
I mean I always ask for it without but they could at least have given those if they had had an issue with a bread delivery and no time to bake them.
