Diabetic teen?

Posting in chat for traffic, sorry.

I'm taking him to the doctor's tomorrow, but I'm just hoping someone might be able to share experiences of their own I can compare.

My son (15) is KNACKERED. Falling asleep multiple times a day, really tired and lethargic when up. He's so thirsty - gets up during the night to drink, and probably drinks 3-4lt of water a day. He also feels really ill after big meals - the last two times we've eaten out we've had to leave early because he's felt like his heart is racing, he feels really "overwhelmed" (his words), and he's really spacey.

I've got coeliac disease so I'm going to ask him to be tested for that too, but we also have diabetes in the family. We're so worried about him - I think my husband would drive him up to A&E if I'd let him.

Does anyone have any experience of diabetes in a teen, and did it manifest itself like this?

@Sh7 I'm the OP. Seven weeks after diagnosis and my son is a million times better. Yes, he has

Too soon!

Yes he has to inject himself and monitor his bloods and count carbs etc, but the not we have back now is so much healthier and happier than the shell he was before.

He's put on TWENTY LB since Boxing Day. Physically, he's in much much better nick. But he's also more sociable, more talkative, has more energy, is enjoying school again, is able to LEARN again. We were all in shock post-diagnosis but now are grateful for the opportunity to have our son back again.

He will learn to live with diabetes. It will become commonplace in your lives, the jargon and the extra maths. It shouldn't stop him being able to do anything!

Please feel free if you want to DM. We've obviously been through it very recently.

My daughter diagnosed age 5 last year. Drinking 3-4 litres a day, wetting the bed and terrible outbursts of crying after school for a few weeks prior to diagnosis. She had lost weight as well. Luckily she was not in a serious state when we got the official diagnosis. Strong history of coeliac in my father's family even though I am not diagnosed. Go to A&E.

Sorry to jump on this post. My DD is unwell. They think possibly anaemic and not mentioned diabetes. She's so tired, struggling to keep her eyes open, weeing lots (urine test was negative), pain upper left stomach, tingly feet and headache. Eating and drinking well (drinking more). It's been just over a week and she is worse but have to wait for bloods. Did those that had the urine dipped find it showed glucose and ketones? I'm on the fence of taking her to hospital as don't want to leave her much longer but the GP pathway takes longer. Thank you.

Sunshineismyfriend · 30/01/2025 12:34

Urine dip showers glucose for us. Did your childs not?

Sparxdislike · 30/01/2025 12:39

The said it was clear so assume not or it would have been mentioned. Thanks for replying.

Sunshineismyfriend · 30/01/2025 13:07

Ok. So don’t worry too much then. Def keep an eye though as not sure that’s conclusive proof that it’s not diabetes. Early stages of diabetes the pancreas can still release insulin sporadically so if you are concerned def go to A&E

Thank you

My son took a while to pick up on dips at the gp and it reached crisis point before he was rushed to an and e very unwell. At this stage he was wetting the bed, had strong pear drops breath, had lost a lot of weight and was tired and grumpy. As the Gp had kept reassuring us we were at a loss for too long.

Defo diabetes - I have type one. Had these symptoms for months

Cakeandcoffee93 · 30/01/2025 15:40

Sorry just realised it’s an old post I commented on. So glad they got him diagnosed.

Sorry I jumped on an old post to ask about my DD.

Sparxdislike · 30/01/2025 15:43

@Bimblesalong thank you. I'll keep a close eye on her. She's fast asleep again at the moment. Any other key things to look for. The GP did say if she had a high temperature or started being sick to go to hospital but she's eating and drinking ok.

Bimblesalong · 30/01/2025 19:09

@Sparxdislike high temp wouldn’t be diabetes I don’t think but equally needs monitoring. Sickness can indicate things are getting serious. Keep an eye on breathing and if it becomes shallow or rapid that is worrying.

Things can deteriorate fast with diabetes so if you’re at all concerned seek medical help quickly. Like you I don’t like how you’ve described her and would be considering hospital.
