Found a lump on back of DS’ neck

Hi,
Just asking for a bit of reassurance please. I have terrible anxiety at the best of times but I’m worried sick. He’s 13 and announced last night that he’d had a lump on the back for his neck since the summer. It’s about half way between the centre and the side and about 1cm in diameter. Very slightly squishy. Of course our GP is closed for Christmas. I don’t know what to do with myself with sheer fear but need to act ok so as not to scare him.

Call the GP as soon as they are open again. Then go from there. try not to worry too much though. It could be something as simple as a lipoma, which is basically just a fatty harmless lump.

very best of luck. Thanks

Thanks xx

Could be a gland or lipoma. No need to worry, just get it checked when the surgery opens.

Lipoma are a bit squishy. Cancer in my limited experience is hard, solid and doesn't move. I had a lump like this before on my spine as a kid and it just went

Tannedandfake · 26/12/2022 09:31

What a worry. I have a harmless cyst top of my back/ base of my neck. It’s been checked and it’s fine. Fingers crossed for your DS that it’s something similar.

custardbear · 26/12/2022 09:33

... but do get it checked out of course!

TurtleTriplets · 26/12/2022 09:49

Try not to worry, my DS developed one at about 6 months old. It's a harmless cyst type thing called cavernous lymphangionma sorry that probably isn't spelt correctly.

Obviously can't diagnose your son for you but just letting you know there are lots of less sinister reasons.

Get booked in at the doctors and let them have a look. The fact it is squishy is a good thing!

Stripedbag101 · 26/12/2022 09:51

Absolutely get it checked urgently just in case but it is likely nothing.

my nephew had this when he was younger. My sister was in bits until she got to the gp. It was a cyst. They pop up every so often now (he is 13). GP says he will always have it - just one of those things.

but I understand it’s scary.

MrsPelligrinoPetrichor · 26/12/2022 09:56

Lymph node maybe.

Cas112 · 26/12/2022 14:43

Please try not to worry I have one on my neck slightly to the left, slightly bigger than a pea and i noticed it last year, had a scan and it was just a lymph swollen after an infection my body fought off but it just never went back down. I was thinking the absolute worse and but they are not always something sinister. Get it checked to be safe but try not overthink it

Gwdihooooo · 26/12/2022 14:46

I’m going to say lymph node because ue’s feeling unwell.

My 13yr old ds had one for ages a few months ago. I panicked and took him to gp.

She reassured me that it was a lumph node. Apparently they’re more
prominent on teens 🤷‍♀️

SnowAndIceLobelia · 26/12/2022 14:52

I was thinking lymph node also (although suggested lipoma above). A close friend had one which was misdiagnosed as a lipoma and when she went off to get it removed privately they said 'Um- nope'. An ultrasound and a needle aspiration later it was an enlarged lymph node due to an infection at some point which she did not know she had had. It was really large also- you could see it through her hair.

So there are many reasons why it might have come up. Not all reasons will be sinister, although it is terrifying when it happens on your child!. Hope it all goes well.

Thank you everyone for your comforting words. I really appreciate it. I’m hoping to get an appointment at the GP’s tomorrow 🤞

At his age almost certainly an enlarged lymph node or a cyst

Mistlewoeandwhine · 27/01/2023 23:33

I just thought I’d come back and tell you all that he had a raised lymph node and a cyst but, after an ultrasound, got signed off by the GP as being absolutely fine. I wanted to add it here as I found googling other people’s stories to be helpful while we waited for his appointment and results. I wanted to leave a positive outcome to help others in the same position.
Anyway, thanks so much for all the support. I couldn’t eat or sleep properly with fear and started crying in the car after the ultrasound because I’d been so scared. My son is fine and I’m so grateful and happy. Thank you to everyone who took the time and trouble to answer me on this thread xxx
