Searching for a keyboard like an office one

Not quite sure what I'm doing wrong as I try to buy a full sized keyboard (Bluetooth, compatible with iPad) off Amazon.

So the keyboards I'm seeing are slim ones with the keys shallowly set. Whilst attractive in appearance, from experience I find I can't type fast and accurately with this type of model, even when full sized.

But when I look for office styled ones - ie with a 'mechanical' keyboard (which seems to be the terminology for those deep set keys on the clunky keys go get on routine office equipment) - they all seem to be gaming keyboards! (Which isn't what I was looking for).

Can anyone tell me appropriate terminology to use for my search criteria so I don't end up with the slim keyboards or gaming ones?!

Try an office supplies shop?

MyrtlethePurpleTurtle · 26/12/2022 08:21

I tried Staples but they're not iOS compatible or, if they says they're universal, they require a USB port (which neither an iPad or iPhone has).

Amazon would always be my preference given the free fast delivery and free returns (plus currently not very mobile due to a minor accident involving a slide and slip on the ice)

I’ve had a quick Google and found these:
www.microsoft.com/en/accessories/products/keyboards/microsoft-bluetooth-keyboard?activetab=pivot:overviewtab

There’s also a keyboard called ‘surface ergonomic’ which has a Bluetooth version.

I love my keyboard in terms of comfort (I do a lot of typesetting) but I can’t see a Bluetooth version of it. Mine is wired so I can’t use it with my iPad.

CrapBucket · 26/12/2022 08:24

I've noticed these days it only tends to be wired keyboards which are clunky. I don't know if there is any sort of 'wired to ios' adaptor but if not someone's missing a trick.

@MyrtlethePurpleTurtle

The one I’ve linked above (massive link from Curry’s) states that it’s compatible with iOS and is Bluetooth connectable.

Ah - but that's one of those slim ones which doesn't have the satisfying 'clunk' of something like this (actually a gaming keyboard but shown for illustrative purposes)

Kensington is the brand I've seen moat often in offices.

But I've never worked in and office using iOS, only Windows so that may not be helpful, sorry.

Some of these might be what you're after @MyrtlethePurpleTurtle

I just Googled "Mechanical keyboard" and went on a site that wasn't gaming specific

bythebanksof · 26/12/2022 15:37

In the office, I've used Logitech gaming mechanical keyboard for many years. I don't use any of the gaming features of course, but it looks nice and simple and ultra-reliable. I like the backlight option too.

While working from home for a period of time during lockdown, I need to buy a new keyboard, and I purchased the Logitech MX Keys Bluetooth and it's now my preferred one, even over a mechanical keyboard.

A keyboard preference is a very personal thing. Can you physically try a keyboard in Currys? To try "hands on". That is important.

What about a cheap one with a wire and a lightning port/ usb c to usb converter?

GlorifiedChair · 26/12/2022 15:59

Keychron!

Can pair with three different devices by bluetooth and switch between them as required (also can connect by USB). Also comes with both Mac and Windows keys. I use mine with Windows laptop and iPad.

Use a USB keyboard linked to the iPad/iPhone through a powered USB hub.

MyrtlethePurpleTurtle · 26/12/2022 17:33

Thank you, all, for the suggestions.

The Logitech ones seems spot on but ouch at the prices (gaming ones seem cheaper).

I think the challenge is getting a mechanical keyboard that is compatible with iPad!

I say again ... Keychron! 😀

They are mechanical and each model comes with a choice of switches (some models are 'hot swappable' meaning you can easily change to different switches if you don't like the ones it came with). They have both Windows and Mac-specific keys and definitely work with iPad.
