What food did you think you didn't like because you'd only had it cooked badly?

Inspired by tonight's trifle.

I hated trifle growing up.

Then had one made using a celebrity chef recipe about 10 years ago now look forward to it every Christmas.

DM 'offered' to make trifle this year. It's bogging. Tinned fruit. Dry sponge. There's hardly any sweetness at all. Think she's used made up custard.

So many other examples:
Red peppers
Macaroni cheese
Tzatziki
Most veg
Lasagne
Omelettes
Cheesecake

Swede, only ever had it at school but dh cooks it very well

MrsDanversGlidesAgain · 26/12/2022 12:47

Cabbage. As a kid I was always served it boiled . Dh fries it in butter and it is lovely

I hated cabbage for years (60s school dinners). Hate wasn't too strong a word, I simply would not touch it or cook it. Then I went to this little cafe in Derby that looks like a greasy spoon from the outside but OMG the food. I had a abraised steak with mash and cabbage and the cabbage was so beautifully cooked and crisp I was hooked. Still don't eat it a lot but definitely more inclined to consider eating it.

I thought I didn’t like tea until I left home. My parents only drink Earl Grey and I hate bergamot. Breakfast tea was a revaluation to me.

I am literally the reverse! Never enjoyed tea until one afternoon when my aunt made a pot of Earl Grey and served me a cup. Milk ruins tea for me...

That sounds good. Is it the veggie roasting tin book? I haven’t look at that again since Ive been able to have dairy.

I had a quick look! It’s in the original one - recipe here:

hexhamchiropractic.co.uk/shelley-s-recipes/cauliflower-broccoli-goats-cheese-hazelnut-crumble/

I was misremembering though as the seeds are in a different roasted cauliflower recipe, also delicious, but without broccoli.

Oh yes tea, hated tea as parents only bought pg tips, tried typhoo in hospital and never looked back.

@BadgerFace do you put them in the oven raw or par boil them first? I've never tried them roasted. I thought that I hated beetroot (only ever having had the stuff from a jar) but tried roasted beetroot and it's lovely!

Hi @thejadefish, sorry for the delay in replying!

marinade the sprouts with oil, bacon, garlic and seasonings. Then spread in a baking sheet and bake for 20-25 mins at 200 degrees. Just before serving sprinkle on Parmesan and toss. Delicious!

our friends also did a nice roasted Brussels with chillies dish recently. Lots of options I think once you get away from boiling them!!

Thank you @BadgerFace sounds pretty straightforward will definitely give it a go!

Veg.

My whole childhood all veg was boiled into mush. It was disgusting.

Now I bloody love most vegetables. They're really tasty when you get chew them instead of them being a revolting sludge that you could suck up through a straw and you strongly suspect have been partially digested prior to being slopped onto your plate.

I thought it was vegetables that were disgusting. Turned out it was my parents' cooking.

And school dinners.

Liver (cooked until it was a grey tough mess. Was like eating a shoe).
Sausages (always cheap ones cooked to death)
Sprouts (boiled until it was like trying to swallow farts)
Stew (could chew on the meat for hours)
Not cooked, but I was put off sharon fruit for years as my DM said they sucked all the moisture out of your mouth. Seems she ate one that was not quite ripe enough. I bloody love them now, and always buy loads when in season.

I now eat all the other things because I know about steaming, air fryers and proper cooking times.

Anchovies- tried on a pizza and couldn't get my head around them at all-

but melted until they disappear into tomato based sauce ,add spinach and wilt and it makes a fabulous savoury pasta sauce
