43 years I've received shit presents and now she can't buy me anything. But DH, DS and DD stepped up to the plate.

My DM was never very good at buying presents since I got married.
Think wire coat hangers, used make up etc it got to the stage
I opened any present a couple of days before so not to be upset on the day.
Unfortunately in may she went into a care home with dementia.
Now she has no idea who I am.

On Thursday I got upset that I wasn't going to get a shit present after seeing her
that morning where again she asked who I was. Silly really as I've complained
for the last 40 odd years.

Friday evening DH got me a box. (Yes it was just a cardboard box)
DS and Dil got me the most hideous looking handbag.
DD bought an orange plastic necklace.
And to top it off the grandchildren gave me a box of chocolates with 5 missing.

Don't worry I had lovely gifts from them all this morning.
Silly how upset I got over something I've moaned about.

Flowerswhat a lovely family, such a thoughtful bittersweet thing.

Lovely post. You have a wonderful family. Merry Christmas.

darkbluelight · 25/12/2022 17:48

How lovely of them. My auntie used to give shit presents. Chocolates 3 years out of date. Half bottle of perfume etc.

Theredfoxfliesatmidnight · 25/12/2022 17:48

Did they do it deliberately, in that tradition? Or did you just get horrible presents xx

Ilikewinter · 25/12/2022 17:51

Ah thats brill OP!

Saucery · 25/12/2022 17:54

Ahh, your family sound brilliant.
I’m sorry you are losing your Mum in this cruel way. Flowers

Nanatokidsdogshampsters · 25/12/2022 17:58

@Theredfoxfliesatmidnight it was deliberate.
Today I opened some lovely gifts.

@darkbluelight in the past I've been given half used perfume.
Chocolates half eaten.

Your family sounds wonderful! DH used to get watered down gin from his late uncle!

ZestFest · 25/12/2022 18:00

I'm so sorry OP and yet that's really affecting and beautiful. I lost my Mum to dementia years before she passed away and it's brutal to come to terms with. After I had grieved her loss (as you are now doing) it became easier to just spend time with her and be in the moment. She knew I was someone and enjoyed my company - and I enjoyed her - even though that lady was no longer my Mum. Sending you hugs and so glad your family stepped up. 😘

I always bought my mam things I knew she would like and DH always got her a series of daft things that made her laugh- always included a packet of Christmas loo roll, an 'extra-strong deodorant, a packet of sore throat sweets, a miniature of gin 'for your handbag incase you get desperate' etc.

When she died he transferred this to me. As well as my proper presents, I always have daft things wrapped up under tree from him and it reminds us both of my mam and how much she laughed.

Soubriquet · 25/12/2022 18:05

Oh that’s so sweet. I’m really sorry about your mum though OP. Dementia really is the worst

This is my favourite Christmas post from today, the things that drive us batty but we miss so much when they are gone, and then to top it off a family that love you enough to notice. Merry Christmas

That's such a lovely post 😊

That was really kind of your family.
Do you think the deterioration in the presents was one of the dementia symptoms?

Blanketsaurus · 25/12/2022 18:19

I love this post.
