Just out of interest how outdoorsy & sporty (indoors & outdoors) are you & your dc? And what do you do on a regular basis?

hi @Littlepiggyinablanket
I go running regularly with my 12yo DD. She does iceskating lessons + practice too. Sometimes we go for walks with Dh and Ds 7.
DS 7 - loves playing tag outside, on park equipment which is very dangerous given wet weather. Does ballet and contemporary dance 10h a week usually

So not reaelly that outdoorsy, but still i find it enough 😄

Merry Xmas!!

OrpingtonWings · 25/12/2022 17:05

Parkrun every week. Junior parkrun on Sundays too. It’s a lovely start to weekend. Social and you can walk or jog at your own pace.

CMOTDibbler · 25/12/2022 17:06

People describe us as a very outdoorsy family. Ds (16) rows (2 days a week in winter, 3 in summer) and cycles. I run, walk, outdoor swim and cycle, dh cycles and walks. Ds also has a paddleboard and kayaks given the opportunity

MinnieMountain · 25/12/2022 17:07

DH and I walk lots. 9yo DS will come now if it’s steep.
We also manage a 1-2 hour bike ride together most weekends.
I swim in the local lido April-September. Most of my solo holidays involve outdoor swimming.
DH plays hockey and we’ve got told DS he’s got to try it in March.

Gwdihooooo · 25/12/2022 17:14

I teach outdoor ed for a living so I’m outdoorsy most days.

It’s rubbed off on my kids and we do loads of stuff outdoors. In fact I’m a shit mum indoors as I just don’t know how to entertain them in the house! I get stressed so take them out! 🤣

WoolyMammoth55 · 25/12/2022 17:16

I want to make changes in this area next year! DS's are 5 and nearly 2. 5yo hates exertion - even steep walks - and was very active until 3 but now refuses.

He's on the list for swimming lessons and we're watching DH do parkruns on Sat morning (when it's dry) to try to get him into junior parkrun on Sundays...

I am jealous of my niece and nephew who live abroad in the tropics and are outdoors and in the pool for hours every day - seems so effortless when the weather is your friend, and such a slog here in the winter...

Please give me some advice on active little ones?!

mondaytosunday · 25/12/2022 17:17

Not me. I walk the dogs every day and like sitting outside for a meal (if that counts) but I'm not that outdoorsy or sporty. My daughter likes the countryside and used to take herself off for little rambles (we now live in London). Quite naturally talented with sport but doesn't like competing which all the school sport seems geared to.
My son is very sporty and outdoorsy. He was on all the school teams snd played rugby outside of school competitively and also rowed. Footie too til injured and now goes to the gym every day before work. Likes setting off on a long walk and sitting in a field with a book.

Littlepiggyinablanket · 25/12/2022 17:19

@WoolyMammoth55 hopefully this thread will be helpful to us! My dc do 30 mins swimming lessons per week, learning swim is a non negotiable but they enjoy it. We're in a suburban area but there's nice parks aroynd. I think trying to incorporate more outdoorsy stuff will really improve our mental health too

Also just to say that their school doesn't do much sports at all & only offers football after school.

Camping and hiking holidays. In my opinion, one thing to do on a typical weekend is to go for walks. It’s fine if these are close to home but the rule should be that you still go even if it is raining. Some of the best walks are in the rain as long as you have the right clothes. Also running, bike rides, and outdoor bootcamps.

Oblomov22 · 25/12/2022 17:25

No. I prefer being at home. I wouldn't chose to go out unless I have to /want to do something.

chary · 25/12/2022 17:26

All quite sporty but not outdoorsy

chary · 25/12/2022 17:28

I walk & dance now, did dance competitions as a kid.

Dc do hockey, tennis, ice skating, football & swimming.

DH swimming & football.

danceinsleep · 25/12/2022 17:30

@chary I did dance competitions too!
None of my dc dance tho :(
They hate sport

Ylvamoon · 25/12/2022 17:32

I'm outdoors walking/ hiking most days ... sometimes DC & DH come along but mostly it's just me and the dog. I go for about 1-2 hours and longer on Saturday & Sunday.

(I need this for my physical and mental wellbeing!)
DC do taekwondoo 2x week for 1.5 hours and I go swimming or gym in the meantime.

DH goes gym 2-3 times a week. He works shifts so not able to do a lot of exerciseing together

chutneypig · 25/12/2022 17:34

We're generally out and about a lot. We have a border collie, so walk as much as we can. Running too, although sadly the dog isn't keen so we don't take her. We all went to parkrun this morning, DD walked the dog while DH, DS and I ran. DS often comes for a run with me, he's at his chattiest while running and he's good company, I really enjoy it.

At 3 our kids were doing half a parkrun (our parkrun course is 2 laps) and then started doing a full parkrun. Walk/jog the first lap and walk the second lap. There was a bit of a tear threshold to get through where they found it hard work but we used to take water round with us and milk in a flask for the finish line. We also take chocolate cake with us for the milestone parkruns (1st,10th, 25th etc). The kids were more excited by doing the same as the adults but then started junior parkrun when they got into it. If they’ve got out of the habit of exercise, which ours did in lockdown, then I think you have to go through a bit of a pain barrier to get back into it. We just made parkrun a weekly thing we just did. If we have a break for hols or illness etc, the first one back is still a bit painful but the kids soon get back into it. We also do events like the Lakeland trials which are very family friendly. One parent does a morning run, kids do a fun run and then other parent does the afternoon longer distance run. There is ice cream, a park and often a bouncy castle.

TheOrigRights · 26/12/2022 22:17

I do nearly all my exercise outdoors; for me being outside is part of the joy.
Run, bike, open water swim and circuits when it's fine.
On days I don't do any of these I will walk, often a traipse across the fields late at night.
DS1 bikes everywhere and DS2 plays football for a local team.
That said, as a family I wouldn't say we're one of those who go for wholesome hikes or spend weekends doing outdoor pursuits, I guess cos we're doing our own thing so time together is spent visiting family or out for meals or to the football.

TheLittlestLightOnTheXmasTree · 26/12/2022 22:19

We all love geocaching....we can walk miles. Teens love it too

cannaethink · 26/12/2022 22:37

We like just getting outdoors and messing about. Climb trees, scramble about on rocks or do a wee cycle. If there’s even a hint of risk then DC are there and up for it 😁
Geocaching is good as pp mentioned.
Sometimes we take a camping stove and make food outdoors which goes down well but tbh is a hassle for me!
I like to occasionally hire equipment and do something like paddleboarding or canoeing. We tried surfing in the summer which was good fun.

icesskaters · 30/12/2022 17:33

my dcs are very keen to start iceskating in the New year :)

twistyizzy · 30/12/2022 17:38

We live rurally so everything is focused on being outdoors: dog walking, horse riding, paddleboarding (spring + summer only). Over Christmas our DD does a 2 hour dog walk with my husband every day but will then slob for the rest of the day. The mantra in this house is that as long as you've had your fresh air and exercise for the day then you can do what you want the rest of the day!

blackheartsgirl · 30/12/2022 17:42

Not much tbh.

dd3 plays football twice a week for a local team.
dd2 walks now and again and attends dance classes
Dd1 hiker and wild swimmer occaisionally

i walk a fair bit but not as much as I used too

would love to do more

blackheartsgirl · 30/12/2022 17:43

Dd3 does come on long walks with me as well
