I'm emetophobic and since last night have felt so unbearably nauseous
Can't sleep at all now and am at the hot and clammy stage. I hate being sick at the best of times but Christmas ducking day for gods sakes

I’d get up and see if that makes you feel any better. Maybe try some hot water and lemon or something? Merry Christmas and hope you feel better soon.

workiskillingme · 25/12/2022 05:50

Thank you
Its miserable feeling like this Christmas morning 😪

The fear of it is worse than being sick. Breathe and let it happen if it needs to, your body needs to expel whatever it is. Fellow emetophobe here, handhold for you. This too shall pass x

ChristmasCrackler · 25/12/2022 05:52

My daughter had emetephobia so i really feel for you 💕 Nauseous feeling very often brought on by anxiety. Get up and make yourself a nice drink. Perhaps some box breathing. Dd learnt hers was a form of agoraphobia and therapy really helped her ti handle it.
Will it help to tell you that you will be absolutely fine? And have a gentle hug from me xx

Darningneedle607 · 25/12/2022 05:55

So sorry you are feeling grim op. That's rotten luck.

While it is horribly inconvenient , you are allowed to be ill at Christmas, so try not to stress about that part, as being anxious about it will exacerbate your symptoms.

Do you think you may have the flu or is it something you've consumed?

Can you distract yourself with a podcast maybe?

And remember to breathe. A good exercise is to imagine you are drawing a square and breathe slowly "around" all four sides if that makes sense. In through the nose and out through the mouth. It's called box breathing and is described in this article here:

ouraring.com/blog/10-simple-breathing-exercises-for-relaxation/

I hope you feel better soon.

I think it's genuine stomach upset rather than anxiety as it's woken me from sleep and I've felt a bit dodgy all week
I just hate it and my daughter is also an emetophobe so it's not like I could just be sick and life would carry on she would then be having kittens over it wouldn't come out her room for days etc etc

There are a lot of bugs about ATM. Sorry you have felt ill all week. And that it's at its worst at Christmas.

It's easy to say. But sometimes it's easier to get through an unpleasant situation if we accept it's happening, rather than try to battle against it. Sometimes that can help to break the cycle of anxiety.

And there are some good apps around that help you change your mind-set where you can follow guided imagery to help calm you down. Aura is meant to be good but I haven't tried it myself.

Also, probably unhelpful to say this ATM, as I know from personal experience that it's not at all easy to do in the moment, but maybe you could start to consider this as an opportunity or catalyst so that you can get some support with your anxiety so you can model to your daughter that although a bug is unpleasant, it is part of life and you will get through it fine. As a pp said, without minimising what you are feeling, sometimes the fear of something is worse than the reality.

This page on the Mind website has some useful exercises:

I have to go and do some Christmas prep now but I hope you are ok op. I will try and pop back on later to see how you are feeling. Sending calming vibes to you!

toppity · 25/12/2022 06:29

Sorry pressed post when trying to edit my imaginative spelling of ‘emetophobe’. The fear and this feeling will be so much worse than actually being sick if you need to be. I always feel better if I turn the lights on. Everything seems worse in the dark. Hope you feel better soon. In a way the sooner you are done with this the better as it’ll be out the way and v unlikely to happen again for ages which might at least help your anxiety for a while. It really is awful being emetephobic 😞

Worklessplaymore · 25/12/2022 06:31

Mollyplop999 · 25/12/2022 07:01

Can you drink camomile tea with some honey in? It really helps when I'm feeling nauseous, which I am due to being on antibiotics

OatMilkLattes · 25/12/2022 07:09

I’m phobic too OP and I totally understand.

how are you feeling now? Do you have any peppermint or ginger tea you could sip?

whatisforteamum · 25/12/2022 07:27

Emetophobe here.
I distract myself,Hoover polish, paint my nails anything to be busy.
I find black tea helps.
I know there are bugs about and I hope you are ok.

Fentylipgloss · 25/12/2022 07:29

Long term emetophobe here!!!

Sorry you're feeling like this today. This sounds really weird but last time I was ill I sat on the toilet, facing the bath, running cold water over my wrists while watching something on YouTube. Wasn't pleasant by any means, but the cold water definitely helps. Also a cold washcloth on the forehead x

Hope you feel better soon.

WorriedMillie · 25/12/2022 08:10

OP, I have a bug that is making me nauseous, but I haven’t actually been sick, so it’s not necessarily a given 🌸

I hope you’re ok ❤️

fungibletoken · 25/12/2022 08:32

So sorry, OP - I used to have emetophobia. Do you have someone with you who can lighten the load a bit e.g. occupy DD if you need to take some time out, pick up food prep? Feeling under pressure often made the nausea and panicky feelings worse for me, so anything to reduce that.

I know people have mentioned bugs which is probably a bit of a worry. But it's not a forgone conclusion that you will be sick. I've had strong nausea for a few days now and nothing has happened, even though nowadays I don't really fight it. If you haven't been so far then I would just try gentle things on the stomach this morning - e.g. ginger or mint yea, a bit of toast or a cracker, and see how you go.

Hope you feel tons better soon 💐

workiskillingme · 25/12/2022 13:10

I wasn't sick thankfully
Still feel a bit queasy today and have stomach ache but I have an appetite for dinner so that's always a good sign

Fungibletoken how can you say used to be emetophbic what changed your mindset

fungibletoken · 25/12/2022 21:36

@workiskillingme so glad to hear it! Hope it passes soon and you can enjoy the rest of the holidays 😊

@whatisforteamum I think part of the issue for me was that I was sick so rarely as a child, so the prospect became something that terrified me as a child and into my teens. What eventually helped was being exposed to sickness a bit more as an adult - e.g. people being drunk, getting food poisoning once or twice. I'd still really rather avoid it (wouldn't everyone!) but I now don't get anywhere near the same panic if I'm feeling nauseous. I even recognise when it might make me feel better. So it's a really personal thing but it can get better 💐
