How is this for a ridiculous price for a charity shop?

I wish dh had enquired more because I’m desperate to know why it was priced like this but…

Harry Potter and the half blood prince was being sold in a local charity shop today for a nice price of…….£45!!!!

He thought it was a misprint so actually took it to the till thinking it would be £4.50 but nope. The cashier wanted £45 for it.

It had a faxed cover and it was a bit bartered too. They had other editions with it being sold for £3.50…so I wonder why this battered book was being sold for that!

It wasn’t a signed copy I know that much. He didn’t stick around to find out more. He basically shot out the shop when he was told that.

He didn’t buy it

Was it a first edition?

Mamamia7962 · 24/12/2022 21:04

First edition or special limited edition.

PlaitBilledDuckyPuss · 24/12/2022 21:04

Just looked on eBay and there are a couple in that price range - apparently some of the first editions have a printing error and are worth more.

Soubriquet · 24/12/2022 21:06

I wish I genuinely knew tbh but the cashier didn’t say it was a first edition or anything.

Apparently she was a bit snooty when he spluttered £45!!!

I guess we will never know

He could have checked if it was a first edition. I guessing cashier assumed he had done so before taking a £45 book to the till.

Has it got Joanne Rowling rather than JK Rowling on the copyright page? They're quite valuable.

Beees · 24/12/2022 21:09

It wouldn't be worth much more than a fiver even if it was a first edition though as by that point they were being printed in the millions so hardly a small print run as everyone was queuing on the day they were released to get their copy.

I'd be equally perplexed and desperate to know why.

TerraNostra · 24/12/2022 21:09

You said they had other editions on sale much cheaper- why didn’t he buy one of those, since he clearly did want to buy the book, just not for £45?

and what is a “faxed cover”?

Tbh, it could have said brand new limited first edition, buy me!! Plastered on it and he wouldn’t have noticed.

He just spotted the book as one missing from DD’s collection and sought an opportunity to get it for her.

Guessing typo for 'foxed'.

Soubriquet · 24/12/2022 21:13

Other editions as other ones such as Harry Potter and the order of the phoenix.

That’s what I meant.

There is a misprint on page 99 of first edition half blood prince, regarding the amount of O.W.L.S Hermione achieves. Should be 10, the misprint says 11.

Worth about £30-£50. So the charity shop is broadly right..
