Does anyone have this fortnum and mason old bauble?

Long shot I know. My mum bought me this bauble years ago, before she died. I stupidly let my six year old put it on her own little Christmas tree, and she rearranged things and now it's broken. I've been a bit of a crying mess this evening. I don't have many things my mum gave me. I think it's about 10 years old, but I could be a few years out.

Does anyone happen to have one that isn't sentimental to them and will sell it to me?

It’s kind of the nature of Christmas things, like Christmas memories that they are a bit ephemeral, not made to last forever. It is tough but instead of trying to replace the old one, why not buy something new and beautiful this year, to help signify both the love you have for your mother but also the continuity of things ?

Could you maybe fix it kintsugi style? Then it becomes part of its story.

I have gathered all the pieces and am planning on seeing what I can do to fix it. I don't think I'll be able to pull off the kintsugi beauty.

My reaction shocked me. I didn't realise it meant so much to me. I'm having a shit time generally at the mo, so it's probably partly that and it all just got to me tonight.

I'd still love a replacement one if someone did happen to have one that they were happy to say goodbye to.

Oh OP I understand x

Nearlyneverready · 24/12/2022 20:37

I understand and I wish I had the same bauble for you.

Perhaps you could place the broken bauble into a clear, fillable bauble with some soft, white feathers surrounding it?

MeJane · 24/12/2022 20:43

I understand too. If I was you I'd put the pieces somewhere safe and take your time to decide what to do with it.

You still have it, it's not gone.

What would your Mum have said do you think? If it had broken.

Could you contact F&M? Very long shot but they might be able to assist

seven201 · 24/12/2022 21:01

Thank you everyone. I won't rush a decision. I'm going to watch home alone now in an attempt to pull myself together!

Lovely idea!

Fortnum and harrods have some of the same suppliers for Xmas stuff. Just have a look as they have really similar ones in the store.

psychomath · 25/12/2022 00:10

@seven201 I have a lot of experience with various crafts and as long as it's not totally splintered, if you wouldn't mind posting the pieces to me I think I'd be able to do the kintsugi repair, if you decide that's what you want. Totally understand if you'd rather not and no pressure to decide now.

Lessoftheold · 25/12/2022 00:25

What a kind offer psychomath

ozymandiusking · 25/12/2022 00:30

What lovely ideas you Mums have.

Saisong · 25/12/2022 00:36

So sorry OP, these things are hard to bear when you have so much else on your plate.

However you decide to handle it, How about you also buy a F&M bauble that you can give to your own daughter to cherish as you did yours (even if she doesn't receive it yet!). Which might bring things full circle for you as you pass on your mums love ❤️.

Beebumble2 · 25/12/2022 00:41

How sad for you. Would it be possible to stick the pieces to a polystyrene ball of the same size?

seven201 · 25/12/2022 03:31

@psychomath what a lovely offer that is. Thank you. I'm not sure why I'm not biting your hand off but I don't think I want to send it away. I am crafty myself so may look into doing it myself. Thank you very much for the offer.
