HELP HELP HELP MOUSE IN BEDROOM!

Sorry for shouting!

The bloody cat has brought a mouse into DD's bedroom and I don't know where it's gone. I'm sitting in the dark with the cat but is there anything else I can do? It's Christmas eve and the shops will be shutting!

Don't worry. You won't hear the thing tonight - not a creature will be stirring.

Is the cat doing anything helpful such as sitting in a particular room and staring intently at where the mouse is? That's what our cat does when a mouse goes into hiding. This means we can prepare a cordon and then move the bit of furniture or whatever the mouse is hiding behind which caused the mouse to run and, when it's cornered, put a plastic bowl under the top. We then slide the long handled dustpan brush under the bowl and carry it outside and up the road to release it in some long grass. Theoretically, this is so that it can run off and live happily ever after in the fields further up the road. However, the cats who live in the adjacent house are very efficient mice killing machines so it's really just a meals on wheels service for them.

Ours get fixated on a particular spot for days. Often they have watched us catch and release the mouse but maintain guard at some random spot they have decided the mouse is.

honesty I would give it a quick hunt and then move on with my life. It will either make its own way out or it will die of shock and you will find it soon enough.

What I am meaning is, it won't be long until it's bedtime for her DD depending on age. Would you put your daughter to bed with a mouse in the room Xmas Sad

Yes I would because it is incredibly likely the mouse is no longer in the room or won't be for much longer after the house goes quiet and it can make its escape. Mice have no interest in running across sleeping children's beds or anything of that nature.

GoodVibesHere · 24/12/2022 18:26

See this is why I don't stay at other people's houses! Some don't care if they have mice!

I hope you manage to get rid of it OP

ouch321 · 24/12/2022 18:26

The bit that would bother me the most is the flooring would be ruined.

GailordFocker · 24/12/2022 18:29

If it's floor boards with gaps or an old 'holey' house then the mouse might have gone inside the building. If it's carpet or laminate and no holes in skirting or gaps to escape then it's probably hiding behind big furniture that doesn't get moved much like wardrobe. Shut the door and leave the cat there. You might need to change the bedding if the cat decides to eat it on top of the bed.

My cat left the skull of the mouth for me but ate it clean it and there was smears of blood.

I really like cats but absolutely hate that they catch and BRING IN mice, rats and birds.

I would care if I had mice, mice are a problem. 1 mouse potentially mortally wounded on Christmas Eve when there is nothing I can do about it? Meh.

Pinkyxx · 24/12/2022 18:39

Quickest way is to put the cat in the room and close the door! The cat will get it in the end.

This is why cats make awful pets, they maim and kill so many other animals.

On the plus side for you though OP - I thought you had a mouse infestation, but you only have one mouse to find!

Cats don't make awful pets. Wouldn't be without my kitties. So loving and affectionate.

They are not vermin! 😡Some people have them as pets !

LaPerduta · 24/12/2022 19:14

It may well have died. Have you shone a torch under the bed?

babynoname22 · 24/12/2022 19:21

So apparently a creature was stirring?

You can't have rats and mice breeding within your home. The smell is hideous when they die off.. even days later!

People have rats as pets too. They’re also vermin.

Ah sorry, too far from Newcastle!

Damnloginpopup · 25/12/2022 02:43

Do you want to borrow my air rifle? Being the season of goodwill you can always just make empty threats in order to tempt it into surrendering.

As likely to work as the ruler into a bucket plan. Which I think is bloody marvellous 😁

stillvicarinatutu · 25/12/2022 02:50

The cat will tell you where it is . Then just pick it up in something if you can't touch it and pop it outside .
I've never been bitten and I used to take mice voles and shrews off the cat regularly.

Very sweet!

Well the mouse didn't stir! No sign of it yet despite the delicious offerings and the wannabe killer cat showed no interest in finding his lovely Christmas present to us. I did bundle up and throw out the blanket it was hiding in so maybe it ran back to that? Here's hoping! The mouse snacks will stay out for a few days, I've now put a wide cardboard ramp leading up to the snickers box in case the ruler was too scary for it.

Most small mammals and birds die within 24 hours after being catted, because of the pasteurella bacteria that cats carry on teeth and claws. Without antibiotic injections, the majority are doomed.

Many years ago, I raised a sparrow from fledgling to adult and when I released it, the neighbour's cat appeared from nowhere and grabbed it. I retrieved the bird, but it was extremely ill for days afterwards. It couldn't even hold its head up and I carried it around in my shirt until it could support its own weight. Never did release it after that.
