Little/odd things you miss about your 'old' house.

I'm clearing out my old family home (which I haven't lived in since I was 19, but still stay here to visit parents) as we are selling it to pay for parents care.

I'll miss lots of things about it, particularly as it is so much larger than my home.

But weirdly I'll miss walking up the stairs the most. They are very ordinary, but somehow they flow so nicely.
I've been in my current house many years, but I still haven't my adapted to those stairs!

What little things do you miss about the homes you've lived in?

Yes the feeling and smell of our wood floors, and of the metal registers on the floor that blew warm air. I think I recall spending a lot of time just laying on the floor 😂

The big garden, the semi open plan style, the downstairs loo!

The hallway being big enough to put the Christmas tree in, absolutely loved that when I was growing up.

The house we moved out of earlier this year - the space. Big living room and separate dining room. This house has a tiny tiny living room and a small kitchen diner. Also the lovely downstairs shower room - both bathrooms in this house are a bit shit. We'll hopefully move on in a year or two, we bought it out of necessity as we needed to move to a new area that had nothing at all for rent and hardly anything for sale.

My childhood home - the smell of shoe polish in my dad's study. My dad in general.

Two flats I've lived in - the beautiful views. One overlooked the sea in Ireland, the other a river in London.

The space, particularly the longer walls. We downsized to a cute cottage, but some pictures have no homes, and we don’t want to get rid of them.

tobee · 24/12/2022 14:37

Oh yeah and house was detached so couldn't really here the neighbours and vice versa

The large cloakroom, such a useful storage space. But people who still live there have converted them into downstairs toilets and we would have probably done the same in the end.

Location, last one was a short stroll into a busy market town. This one is more rural with a short walk to either the pub or the post office.

the neighbours. Last one had decent lovely neighbours both sides, this house is twice the price, and the neighbours on one side are ten times shittier, seriously entitled selfish people who can’t even grasp that’s what they are. The other side literally hide from all physical human contact. Fortunately the rest are lovely.

I miss my childhood home with the patio that wrapped around the back of the house. It had a very large back yard with my mother's many rosebushes and my father's peach, apricot, plum and pomegranate trees. In the corner of the back yard, we had prickly pear cacti and I loved seeing the hummingbirds and butterflies when the flowers bloomed there as well as eating the sweet cactus pears on a summers day and the paddles in a spicy chile tomato sauce.

I do miss the view from my back garden in a home I lived in Greater Manchester. My home was open in the back and I could clearly see the hills. It was always very comforting to me.

I miss the log burner I had at a previous house. I know they're a bit of an environmental disaster but there's nothing cosier than a real fire, especially at this time of year when you can sit with your feet up and a baileys in hand watching all the Christmas TV in front of it.

Seeing my back garden from the kitchen window. I now have 22 steps to my back garden 🙄

grapehyacinthisactuallyblue · 24/12/2022 15:03

My childhood home is where my parents still live. We moved around a lot due to my parents' work, but never sold the house and parents moved back in after retirement.
My old room has a window that can walk out onto the roof, where I spent a lot of time looking at the stars at night.
I also miss the garden full of flowers, as well as kitchen garden full of vegs.

fancyacuppatea · 24/12/2022 15:04

Straight stairs - current ones are U shaped and lethal if you're wearing beer goggles
Beautiful leaded and coloured window in the front door.

My last home was a flat now a terrace with a garden. I miss how easy it was to clean so I always felt calm as the place was organised. Also I miss not having a garden, there was a communal garden that was tended to so I never had to look outside and feel guilty I didn’t do more in the garden. Homes are so much more work than a flat

I miss the washing hanging space in our old house. We had one of those pull down airers in the kitchen (we now have a sloped ceiling in the kitchen so couldn't add one) and our top hallway had a banister all the way along which was also excellent for hanging clothes.
We now only have the airing cupboard and over the doors, which we had in our last house too.

Your childhood home sounds idyllic, I love your description of it too!

Our old house had a pantry. Oh how I miss it.
Modern larder cupboards / big kitchens just don't come anywhere near how wonderful it was.
