Does this sound like a fractured/broken little toe?

Banged it last night and it was really sore till I slept maybe 30 minutes later. This morning it is slightly pink and swollen. I have some slight pain when I walk on it and put slippers over it but not unbearable at all.

No prior experience of any breaks or fractures and thoughts really welcome, thank you in advance.

Possibly. I think I had a broken toe once. It healed eventually. Don’t think there’s anything to be done in any case. .

When I broke my toe I could not put any weight on it whatsoever. It was extremely painful to touch. So painful that in bed I couldn't let my duvet touch it. The toe was red and swollen, hugely so, and I just knew it was broken.

But that was just my personal experience.

GoodVibesHere · 24/12/2022 07:47

Oh I also could not sleep due to the pain. I was awake all night in pain (despite painkillers).

It's quite easy to fracture a little toe. There's very little that can be done so I wouldn't bother going to walk in centre or anything, especially if you're weight bearing. Rest, ice, elevate. You can gently strap to adjacent toe to offer some support but this is tricky with little toes.

Doesn't sound like a broken toe, from my experience. Mine have been hugely swollen and red, incredibly sore, and then gone black the next day!

SeasonsBleatings · 24/12/2022 07:59

Thanks so much all! Have managed to order a silicon toe support to arrive today so will rest up and hope it's just a bang!

I broke my little toe last summer. it was incredibly incredibly painful when it broke- stubbed it on sofa leg. It was deep red and bruising came out underneath first, where it joins the foot, and then on top. There's nothing to be done for a broken small toe- though a big toe requires medical attention asap. I just got my widest trainers, loosened the laces to the max at the bottom but tight at the top to hold my foot steady, and hobbled round on the inside of my foot for a few weeks until I could walk painlessly again. Lots of pain killers in first few days. I imagine there'll be arthritis there in a few years.

I broke my little toe in mid- October 7 years ago. I could not wear anything other than Birkenstocks until new year and the side of my foot was bruised
up to the ankle for weeks. X-ray revealed it had snapped right through but nothing to be done except wait! Ibuprofen and ice helped a bit. Sympathies, OP

CoffeeBoy · 24/12/2022 08:19

Mine have always gone black and very swollen when I’ve broken them.

Oh that's interesting as I broke my big toe but they didn't do anything other than strap it to the next toe along (a toe which doesn't have 'a name' !). Should they have done something else? What else could they have done? It was 15 yrs ago. I do have arthritis in that toe now. They said there wasn't anything they could do, and that I just had to keep my foot raised as much as possible to help it heal.

GreenLunchBox · 24/12/2022 08:23

It will take 3-6 weeks to heal if it's broken. All they'll do in A+E is strap it to the next toe with surgical tape

Hoardasurass · 24/12/2022 08:41

@GoodVibesHere when my mum badly broke hers they surgically screwed/pined (both terms used by Dr's) it back together but it was a really bad break so I guess it depends on the severity . Also the arthritis from any break is very common which is why people say they have a weather ache after a break, it's happened to me with all of mine except my ribs and I know that most of my fellow regulars at the fracture clinic are the same.

PrincePrecious · 24/12/2022 09:04

@GoodVibesHere I just remember reading on here www.nhs.uk/conditions/broken-toe/
the NHS advice was go to A&E for a broken big toe.
Arthritis unfortunately can start from an injury. I've already got it in my shoulder so, pessimistically, expect it to eventually follow a broken toe somewhere down the line...

MulledWineAndMingePies · 24/12/2022 09:07

I broke my little toe and it wasn't a little sore, it was excruciating.

it wasn't a little pink, the whole half of my foot was black.

Yours doesn't sound broken. And even if it was, they won't do anything anyway.

evemillbank · 24/12/2022 09:28

I think it unlikely. When I broke my toe it was excruciating

Girasoli · 24/12/2022 10:18

I broke my little toe recently (ex dancer, the poor thing had already broken before). It didn't hurt that much but the next day was twice the size of the other little toe and had gone pinky/purple. Could only hobble about in socks that day.

For about a week I could only wear slippers or really flimsy canvas trainers but could walk on it gingerly.
Am on week 3 now and I'm fine unless one of the DC accidentally knocks into it.

SeasonsBleatings · 24/12/2022 15:41

Thanks again all and sorry to hear of previous breaks!

Is is still a bit sore but doesn't seem hugely swollen or discoloured at all so I am hoping and assuming it was just a nasty knock.

IToldYouAmillionTimesAlready · 24/12/2022 15:43

Possibly. If it IS broken, all that can be done is to tape it to the next toe with sticky plaster. It's all a hospital would do, and certainly isn't worth going there

Papergirl1968 · 24/12/2022 15:53

Think iI broke mine once stubbing it on something. It was pointing out to the side and was very sore but I wouldn't say excruciating. I can't remember if It was red and swollen but it certainly didn't go black.

RoseMartha · 24/12/2022 16:13

Possibly, I think I broke my little toe once. I was unable to wear shoes for about three months and had to wear trainers. I didn't get it checked out at A and E. But it was very painful and red and swollen.
