At what point do I worry about this chest infection?

I had this rotten bug a couple of weeks ago and after a few days of feeling better developed this cough. Since three days ago I had shivers, sweats, pain and crackling. I’ve been sick several times.

It’s Xmas Eve and I’m still feeling too ill to work (it’s our busiest day of the year and I’m leaving the team in the lurch, if I could go in I would). I can barely walk two steps with light having to sit down.

GP call back yesterday was very brusque; it’s viral, get some rest and it will pass. But I am starting to stress now, this is day 4 of this. I feel worse than with the original flu and I thought that was the worst.

Is there any point spending the next few hours on the line to 111 again? Are they just going to tell me the same?

I don’t know how they can decide that without at least listening to your chest. I’d try again OP and say you’re worried you’ve got a secondary bacterial infection. I hope you’re on the mend soon.

Is what you are coughing up green ?

KangarooKenny · 24/12/2022 08:59

I assume you’re taking paracetamol and ibuprofen, and keeping liquids down ?

Can you take a photo of the stuff you’re coughing up? I had a nasty infection earlier in the year and just sent the photos to the Gp and they gave me antibiotics straight away as the sputum was basically putrid. One of the thing they asked me about was crackling which I had.

Could you pay for a private appointment? don't know if there might be some available today?
I am on day 16 but I have been fortunate enough for it not to go to my chest, you definitely need to see someone x

Have you got a temp OP ?
Are you breathless or wheezy ?
Rest, plenty of fluids esp water, regular paracetamol and brufen. Try not to stress about work as that will make it worse although easier said than done !

I went via 111 form after two weeks, first week was mild annoying cough and cold, second week was how you described (hacking up phlegm, couldn't sleep, vomiting in the night). Was x Rayed and had lower respiratory infection.
Depends how bad you feel, I couldn't even get out of bed but also couldn't sleep it had got so bad. 111 form sent me to a and e triage and was sorted fairly quickly as they were expecting me. I am heavily pregnant not sure if that's why they pushed it through faster.
