Anyone up in the wee small hours of Christmas Eve??

imaderrygirl · 24/12/2022 04:11

Not the Christmas Eve I hoped for.
Sitting on DS(17)'s floor - he went out last night to a 'gathering' of 4 or 5 friends - obviously badly misjudged his alcohol intake. DD went to collect him at midnight and then phoned us distraught - he was passed out on the bathroom floor where it turned out he had been for 2 hours; he had been very sick and was freezing cold. DH and I went over there and it took 2 of us to get him onto his feet and out to the car. Made a judgement call that he didn't need hospital but put him to bed in the recovery position, brought his body temp up and put a very large bucket next to him. I've stayed awake by him just in case and I'm glad I did - he was awake again at 3.45 vomiting but barely conscious.

This is insanely out of character - he's never ever done it before and is usually Mr Conscientious. We'll be having a serious conversation tomorrow when he's in a fit state.

I sent DH to bed because he's done a 7hr round trip today to see MIL who is in the final stages of dementia. He was worn out before this drama even unfolded.

Poor old DD has work at 9am tomorrow.

I have about a billion Christmas Eve jobs to do before all the extended family arrive for Christmas. Not relishing the prospect on zero sleep.

It is one bloody thing after another.

Getting far too drunk once in your life is a rite of passage! I did it once, many years ago. After that I went to uni and was pretty responsible. And I have never ever got anywhere near as drunk since.

He is so lucky to have you looking after him, and he will hopefully have learned a valuable lesson tonight!

Vebrithien · 24/12/2022 06:43

I hope you have managed a light doze, if nothing else.
I did exactly the same and your DS, the summer before Uni, whilst I was still at home. Never did it again 🤣

I've sorted out the washing, the dishwasher, sloshed some bleach around the bathroom, and have just sat down for a cuppa, before the littles will be up at 7:30.

We've got the PIL visiting (thank the Lord they are staying in a little cottage 5 mins away), so in order to fit in our traditional Christmas Eve activity, it's an early one for us all today. We're off to our local gymnastics centre, for soft play and somersaulting Santa! The children can run off a bit of energy.

I'm sat down, in the dark, by the lit Christmas tree. I'm a lark anyway, but I treasure this short respite of silence.

Vebrithien · 24/12/2022 06:46

No near and tidy colour themed tree for us, it's '80's colour and mismatched joy here!

Anyone up in the wee small hours of Christmas Eve??

After laying in bed wide awake since about 2, I'm now up.
DC for home an hour ago but I couldn't get back to sleep.
Today is going to be a bloody long day
I hope we all have strong coffee to get us through

Borobev · 24/12/2022 06:52

Hi , I'm sorry you had to go without any sleep and then having to worry about DS not mention DD and DH and Christmas and extended family. As for you saying it not being like him we do have to remember A, he is 17 what were you up too at that age lol B, peer pressure from his so called mates then on top of that its Christmas.

Did you know that front of our brains the front lople (sorry about spelling in advance lol) is where our common sence comes from so like our thinking of consequences and it really is not developed untill were 25 . That's why kids run on roads to after balls after you have told them a thousand times not to or why you get idots jumping of roofs or balconies into pools . I was 15 the first time I drank like your son when I woke up the next day my mam made clean up all the vomit myself doing that and the hangover was enough to stop me from drink well forever lol . I now only have a drink at partys or soical events like tonight as all my children are teenagers now and in college or doing GCSES so me and DH are going out tonight for first time on a Christmas eve since before my first born (DS 18 and his in charge others wont like that lol) but even then never ever get drunk lol. So I hope he has learned his lesson and that you can get some nap time or a very early night . Also please dont worry about DS thinking there something wrong he tried drinking its went wrong for him and not only that he might even feel daft in front of his mates more so if someone he likes was there and his been passed out for 2 hrs . Its sounds like you have brought him up right and everyone is allowed one mistake when there a teenager and its Christmas. Sorry this was long .
Hope you have a great Christmas and happy new year .

Sorry to read this OP. It doesn’t get easier does it? Up until 2am wrapping presents and back up at 5.30am with DD with an over 40c temperature. Lots of plans today that I hope aren’t derailed by a trip to the walk-in centre. Hope your son isn’t too sore headed today - hopefully this will be a bit of a life lesson for him.

Fraaahnces · 24/12/2022 06:55

Just wondering if he may have accidentally had a spiked drink @imaderrygirl. It’s a bit of a prank to do it these days.

figrollmop · 24/12/2022 07:01

My heart goes out to you. Mine are younger but I am absolutely dreading this stage already. I don't know how I will cope!

AnSionnachGlic · 24/12/2022 07:02

Oh OP sympathies to you. I had similar with my 21 year old few months ago (who rarely drinks) but she was away in college and staying in a flat. Thankfully she has sensible friends who were alarmed whe she went from drinking , talking normally in a club to passing out! Luckily her friends called my other dd ( 23) who brought her back to her apartment , sat up with her,and she was violent ill for hours. I only found out next day and was shocked and really worried. All her friends think her drink was spiked but she did have a fair bit to drink herself! It was a tough lesson for her. I'm awake as spent yesterday in A&E with high temperature, shaking, wheezing, coughing and got home with a bag full of meds so feeling rotten🤒. I too have a house full but I'm so weak I've had to cancel other visitors and delegate tasks to my 4 kids ( 16 - 23) and my dh. My 16 year old son is only worried that the stuffing won't be the same if dds are doing it. Happy Christmas to you all 🙂

Poinsettas · 24/12/2022 07:23

That’s tough OP. The hangover will be a lesson along with a stern chat from you. As others have said I’d be very upset with the friends and would make a point saying if he’d genuinely needed medical attention they left him in the floor alone for 2 hours - not cool.

Good luck, he’ll be fine for tmrw 🎅 so I’d write a list of jobs he needs to do.

Andsoforth · 24/12/2022 07:25

What a night op! It’s a good thing in a way that he’s had his monumentally stupid drinking incident now, before he sets off to college. It might even teach him a valuable lesson about friendship too.

helpnowplease · 24/12/2022 07:26

Been here with my 17yo a few months back. Thankfully his friends brought him home. Physically carried and dragged up my stairs. Seeing your child being carried like a dead body, out of a car, is not something I would wish on anyone. I put him in the recovery position and sat up all night and next morning with him in my hall, terrifying myself reading about alcohol poisoning as he shivered and lost control of his bladder numerous times. He was giving me dogs abuse whenever I did manage to wake him and It took him so long to sober up that I had to take an emergency holiday from work as I just couldn't leave him.

He said it's because he was doing vodka shots.

He played it down and pushed the boundaries a lot when we discussed it, and now that he's 18, he's out three nights a week. I've never seen him like that again and I pray I never do.

Sometimes I think I wish he was a toddler again, but then I'd still have all this to go through again.

For you, OP

SeveruslyFrazzled · 24/12/2022 07:33

Yep. Wrapping. I haven’t been to bed yet.
knackered. Going to try and catch a few hours!

Candymay · 24/12/2022 07:36

You are a lovely mum. I did the same at 16. Ended up in hospital. Mum definitely didn’t sit with me making sure I was ok.
sorry for you with the lack of sleep etc. I also have a sick child- different reasons so not as worrying. But I have so much to do today. All the gifts need wrapping. Food needs to be bought. And I need a new oven. I have to try to fit one otherwise no proper dinner. Some gifts need to be bought too.

unlike you i have no family to host so it’s just my immediate family so no stress there.
youve been such great parents to your son tonight. These things happen but you’ve been there for him. You’re a fantastic person I can tell. I hope your son feels better soon and that you have a good Christmas.

Double0FeckingBollocks · 24/12/2022 07:54

I hope everyone is ok this morning OP- and agree with others you sound like a lovely family. I have seen 3 soon to be 4 teenagers through the experimenting with alcohol stage and it's terrifying. Meanwhile elsewhere on MN there's someone justifying sending her 14 yo off to a party with bottles of alcohol. I hope she reads this thread.

shiningstar2 · 24/12/2022 08:07

Also awake worrying about dgs 17. DD found weed in his coat pocket and he wants to drop out of A levels. Seems more influenced by 'friendship' groups opinions than his lovely parents. And he's soon to be 18 so going to be hard to manage realistic boundaries. Add to that his attitudes seem to show he's borderlines Asperger's (we are both teachers and have seen similar in diagnosed kids at school) but managed school fine up to GCSE. Never a problem. His parents are also often awake at night considering how best to support him

userh79 · 24/12/2022 08:30

I think this is the part of parenthood I'm dreading more than anything else! Hope you're both ok.

JennyForeigner · 24/12/2022 08:54

My sister did this once, on Christmas Eve. She was a straight A responsible kid and has such embarrassed memories of it that she has never done anything like it since.

Thankfully you had an arrangement in place to get him home and it will be nothing but a memory.

Vicliz24 · 24/12/2022 14:09

Hope your boy is chastened embarrassed but largely ok now OP ?? I spent a lot of last night thinking of you . My ear ache turned out to be a raging infection which had actually perforated my ear drum by the time I got to urgent care at 9am so I'm glad I went. Antibiotics prescribed and hopefully we will all be in a better place by the time Santa comes .

imaderrygirl · 24/12/2022 16:26

@Vicliz24 thank you, that's very kind.
He's had a really rough day, struggling to keep water / rehydration drink down but now looking much better although hugely contrite and swearing it will never happen again!

Your ear infection sounds awful - glad you got antibiotics. Hope there's an improvement for tomorrow!

AgathaMystery ( great username btw!) wondering if your brother knew he was ill before he came? If so, that’s extremely inconsiderate as you could all go down with whatever he has over Christmas.

Ah no, he’d started some new meds 3 days ago & didn’t realise they could be disastrous with booze. He had a mulled wine and it didn’t end well!

he was fine by the middle of the night. Phew!
