Thinking about visiting family on the the 27th, strike finishes at 6am. Is it chaos usually the day after a strike?

Hopeful bump...

Depends where you're going and which train service. Here in the south east, the day after a strike, trains start later (7.30am - so half an hour later than I'd normally leave for work) and are more crowded. It feels like a Sunday service, but more crowded.

Ah ok,that sounds manageable. Thanks.

Surprisingly OK. There was one cancellation but otherwise running normally. Busy, but no more than usual for this time of year.

SingingSands · 24/12/2022 00:15

It's not usually great. Trains, drivers and staff are all over the place so a lot of services are cancelled or delayed until they can "catch up". Just keep an eye on the Trainline App.

Family member got a train -well a few - on 15/12 but theirs was later in the day. Absolutely no problems.

Orangeteddy · 24/12/2022 00:34

Depends on time of travel. I normally commute and get the train around 7am, after strike days first train is 8.30am and very limited service initially as all the trains are in the wrong places. Sorts itself out by late morning

Sarahcoggles · 24/12/2022 00:46

We're due to catch a train on 27th about 8.30am to get to an airport. I've been told by a rail employee not to risk it, due to potential delays. However , if we weren't on a strict time schedule, we'd still take the train. As it is, we're driving.

Whew I am the signal boxes don't open until 11am,

MrsPelligrinoPetrichor · 24/12/2022 01:16

Looks like a nightmare journey according to the app, not evening starting up until home midday.

Here in London it takes til 8am the day after for service to resume properly. We live near a train/tube station and even if it's just a rail strike it affects the tube too.

CatJumperTwat · 24/12/2022 02:08

It takes way longer than 8am to get back to normal in my part of London. Trains would arrive packed to the brim and leave the station with nobody having been able to get on. This would go on until past 10.

Trains will be in the wrong place at the start of the day so many will be cancelled and the rest late.

Might be different on a day when lots of people are off work, but I wouldn't count on it.

BasicDad · 24/12/2022 02:13

I've tried travelling for work on numerous occasions the day after industrial action, and sad to say, I've been cancelled on more times than not. It's maybe not the the a we with different operators, but Avanti West Coast takes a good day to get back to normal.

Contrary to popular belief, in normal times, they run pretty well.

Luredbyapomegranate · 24/12/2022 02:14

Yep. The trains are all in the wrong places. Takes half a day to a day to get back to normal

popandchoc · 24/12/2022 07:34

Pretty bad last time here. First train was at 8.30 and was full. Next train was about 9 and 4 carriages so packed again.

I travelled on the day before which was a strike day and very pleasant journey.

Phineyj · 24/12/2022 08:21

One tip I got last time was to get on further up the line than normal.

taurussally · 24/12/2022 08:26

As others have said depends where you live. Mainline in a busy area and you could be okay. Live further out and it could be an utter shit show.
