Which Ring doorbell? Do any buzz/ring out loud?

I've just moved into a new build house, it doesn't have a doorbell at all. Thought we would use the opportunity to get a 'ring' one but really want one that makes a noise - is that a thing? Happy with wired (will pay an electrician) or wireless but would like to get it ordered today - help??

you buy a unit that plugs in in the house somewhere which has the 'chime' ours is in the kitchen.

It connects to the ring on the door through WIFI

HouseToBoxToVanToHouse · 23/12/2022 19:29

That sounds perfect @QforCucumber do you know what the chiming unit is called?

Sorry I got distracted by 1,000,000 boxes earlier...

If you have an Alexa the ring will chime through that. If you don't you need a chime unit. It's called a
Ring chime.

RoyFuckingKent · 23/12/2022 19:47

Ring and Alexa work exceptionally well together (both owned by Amazon so unsurprising really)
Depending how far you want to go with it, an Echo Show can ring as a bell, announce a gate opening if a sensor is triggered, show a camera view and even arm and unarm an alarm by voice.

If you plan to build a system, buy a Show whilst they are on offer, otherwise an Echo Dot is cheaper than a Ring Chime right now.

Conveniently enough they call it a Chime!😂

At least 4 of my neighbours have doorbells that ring outside the house, they are very loud. I have no idea why they would want to do that as they are inside which is where it needs to be heard.

It is a nuisance for anyone trying to get some sleep as they can be heard with the windows shut. I changed the sound on my bell as I kept thinking it was ours.

Have had Ring ones twice and retuned them - not the ones that you can hear for the full length of the road, just the ones for normal people who don't need the nation to know they have visitors. The reason being that the wifi was sketchy with them. It may have been something in the structure of the house that was interfering with the signal but I read that it does happen. Depends on your area and house.

We got a ring doorbell only recently. After 18 years at this house with no doorbell at all. Its been great, you get to see who is at the door on your phone. The free trial of video on phone isn’t very long, only a week or two . But by then we were hooked, missed the video so much we signed up for it. Think it was about £38 per year.

We now know what the milkman looks like 😂

Well this thread is amazing - I happen to know that I'm getting an Alexa show for Christmas so suddenly the ring is even better!!

We have a Ring doorbell and the chime and you can change the chime to various different sounds! At the moment we have a train whistle every time someone comes to the door 😂😂😂. Husband is a big train fan quelle surpris!

I have a lot of Ring stuff and it works so well. As soon as the front gate is opened the Alexa will announce that it's been opened (had some issues with a local man with mental health issues wandering around our property at night so fitted it to give me a heads up he's there).

'Alexa Show Front Door' will give you a view from your doorbell, this will stay on a while as well so if you're expecting someone you can keep an eye out. Same applies to other cameras, 'Alexa show 'cam name''

You will need to set it up to do all that, but it's pretty easy.

See this shows how much I don't know about Ring. I didn't realise it was a subscription service, so if you don't subscribe what happens when someone rings the bell?

You can answer the bell in real time away from home, but it will not save those recordings and you can't go back and review. It still works, it just doesn't save anything.

I had a ring for a couple of years without the subscription, but when we upgraded to the burglar alarm and CCTV took out the year Protect Plan as that monitors the alarm, included in that is the ability to review recordings.

ChristmasCakeAndStilton · 23/12/2022 20:33

Not what you asked, but DH went for an euffy when we needed a doorbell following a house move.
Mainly because of the subscription side - ours is subscription free, wireless, rings inside (only DH has it on his phone, the rest of us just use it like a doorbell). It did come with a box that I think is linked to keeping the videos for more than <short period of time>.
Only thing I'd say is batteries don't seem to last particularly long before they need recharging - probably only a month, which I think isn't great, but it saved us drilling wires, and putting in a new socket, so worth it.

tanstaafl · 23/12/2022 20:37

if it’s a video feed you’re also after this doesn’t apply, but I’ve bought a stick on or screw in door bell which comes with two speakers you plug into the mains in your house.
doorbell runs off one of those 2p sized batteries.

I've had Eufy tech in the past and it is decent.

I think it depends what you want from things, if you just want a bell with the smart ring then most of the doorbells do this now. If you want to expand in the future then consider what you want to go with a little more carefully so you can link everything if needed.

I rather love the idea that there might be a way to link a Eufy Bell to the robot hoover though so it gives a quick clean if someone turns up 😂

Love this Xmas Grin

Sorry I've no advice OP

CointreauVersial · 23/12/2022 20:50

You need a "Chime". It just plugs into any socket and rings when someone presses the bell. I got mine in a bundle with the Ring itself.

Or use Alexa, as people have said. I use both, so we hear the doorbell wherever we are.

You only need the subscription if you want it to "save" your videos. Which is really the main reason we bought it. If you just want a video doorbell to use "live" you don't need a subscription.

CointreauVersial · 23/12/2022 20:51

Oh yes, and buy a spare battery. Otherwise you have half a day with no doorbell while it's charging.

HouseToBoxToVanToHouse · 23/12/2022 21:27

I do have a Eufy robovacuum 😅

I'm nearly fully deaf following meningitis when a child. I have one of those bells that plug in and it rings indoors. When it rings it buzzes on my Apple watch and I can also see who is at the door on the watch.

Best Thing Ever. for me anyway!

Shatterproof9 · 23/12/2022 21:36

some echo shows and ring doorbells have a bug where the outdoor chime is super loud, no matter what volume you set it at. I keep it silent outdoors and get the chime on the show.
it’s annoying and Ring know about it but haven’t done a thing about it for two years, no matter how much I’ve complained 😅
