Lots of people saying they have covid - are they testing or self diagnosing?

I went to test dh yesterday but we only had one left and the liquid solution was missing. It doesn’t really matter as it’s either covid or flu - either way he’s bed bound.

I’m nhs and so had lots of tests initially but now we’re told not to test so reading here how many people are saying they have covid (and friends on Fb) have actually tested? It’s not a criticism, just curious if people are moving to self diagnosing without tests like with flu.

I still get the tests sent for free because I have a condition that means I am at very high risk. So I still test regularly. I'm not "paranoid" though, this is based on medical advice so I can order the anti virals if i test positive

I have covid now and I bought tests after my husband started feeling unwell. Subsequently we all have it now. I feel dreadful. Merry Christmas 😭

I had a box of tests leftover from god knows when. When I felt strange I opened the box and the liquid had almost disappeared so I cobbled enough together for two tests and we are positive for the first time. Was shocked! Over it now thankfully

I tested positive last week and used a left over test from when they were free. I'd spent the day working and felt like sh*t, just wanted to test to legitimately be able to work from home. We're so short staffed I wouldn't have rang in sick had it been negative and would have worked through it. I feel guilty enough about all the people I was in contact with on the one day I did go to work.

What confuses me is that we were always told that lateral flow tests, which is what I assume people are using, we're for if you were WITHOUT symptoms (if you had symptoms you got a PCR). But now people are using lateral floes to check when they do have symptoms. Is that right? I thought the whole reason for this original advice was that lat flows were not accurate if you had symptoms? The nhs website looks like they've changed their advice too but why would this be?

Nobody ever said that LFTs shouldn’t be used if you have symptoms.

Yes, they did. Because lft are not as sensitive as orc and so especially at the start of infection can give false negative.
but they won’t give a false negative so if your positive on lft you have it. If you’re negative, you still might have it.

Testing. I stocked up before they stopped issuing as my DP is CEV and now have a cupboard full as I have my late DF’s stash from clearing his house as well as my own stash.
