So I bought an air fryer. What to cook in it?

I have been trying out all the Christmas nibbles. Tempura prawns, cod bites, pigs in blankets and I love it crispy on the outside juicy in the middle. What’s your favourite air fryer food is there a recipe book for air fryer cake?

I’ve just cooked, courgette, tender stem broccoli, pepper and Halloumi, with chilli, it was delicious

bloodyeverlastinghell · 22/12/2022 20:31

I steamed the brocolli whilst eyeing up the air fryer wondering if I could cook it in there.

I made cheese scones in mine yesterday.

Biggest waste of money AF's. They don't tell you re the preparation times etc and the cleaning of the unit. Having said that the food does taste better.

I guess the times and just stick all the parts in the dishwasher afterwards.

Ive just been cooking stuff for half the recommended time at the same temp. Then checking and it’s cooked through. It wasn’t v. Expensive £50 from b&m.

Chips are without doubt the best thing that cooks in there but I use mine for all my meat now, roasts, jacket potatoes, cheese toasties, homemade croutons etc. I've seen you can make fritata/omelette in there if you use a paper liner. If you get silicone liners you can make just about anything in there, from casseroles to curries!

It's also great for browning off/sealing meat quickly before you put it in a slow cooker :)

IbizaToTheNorfolkBroads · 22/12/2022 20:38

I use mine instead of my oven. This week I have cooked:
Jacket spuds
Flapjack
Chocolate cake
Soda bread
Fishfingers, sausages, wedges, chips, chicken kievs

Many pies warmed up

I only really use the oven for lasagna and pizzas that are too big for the air Fryer. Clean up is minimal.

IbizaToTheNorfolkBroads · 22/12/2022 20:39

@MrsMamaD, I use a silicone cake tin in mine as a "roasting tin" tour of thing.

Snowdropsarelovely · 22/12/2022 21:13

I've just got one ! How long do you cook things for ? Eg jacket potatoes? Did sausage and chips tonight. Sausage were lovely, chips needed more cooking. Reading this thread I think I need a silicone liner too

Broccoli isn’t great in the AF
Im currently dehydrating slices of orange for our Christmas cocktails

For jacket spuds, you’re best to microwave them to cook them through first, then crisp them in the AF after.

MotherWol · 22/12/2022 21:39

Jacket potatoes - microwave first then crisp up in the AF.
skin-on chicken thighs - a little oil, salt and smoked paprika on the skin first.
pork belly - so crispy and so much fat drains off!

The one I got (Cosori) came with a recipe booklet that has times/temps, but there’s lots of blogs online with directions to help you find the right settings.

I air fryed a baking Camembert it took 12 minutes and is so lush. Port, apples and fancy crackers. It’s the season of excess👍

I made lovely teriyaki salmon in mine, pork roast, chicken roast, roast potatoes, anything I can do in oven I can do in mine and steam, slow cook, grill and air fry I’ve had mine years and it’s v easy to clean. I got it as my oven broke - it was a gift till I got a new oven.

I did crispy tofu in ours yesterday. Also use it for bacon, sausages, warming up pizza, quiche, pastries, part bake bread, chicken tikka, halloumi, all sorts.

Quicker and cheaper than the oven, better than the grill for things like bacon because you don't need to watch it so closely - ours has a bacon setting, so you can just press that and it turns off and keeps it warm at the end, whereas if you wander off and forget about the grill, you can set the house on fire.

As for times, just put the food in there until it looks cooked. Little and often until you get the hang of it. Preparation times on packets and in recipe books are often way off anyway, so hardly prescriptive.

IbizaToTheNorfolkBroads · 23/12/2022 21:04

Jacket spuds - 40 mins on 200 works ok in mine. I do 4 at a time with skewers in.

What make have you got ?

Lennybenny · 23/12/2022 21:09

Air fryer pizza
Sausages
Bacon wrapped sausages with Brie and Cranberry.
Breaded chicken
Breaded halloumi
Exfil did, bacon curled up on a piece of bread with an egg broken in the centre.

You can also do Yorkshire puddings in the AF...... pour mixture into ramekin dishes and put into AF to cook 🫢

BarbaraofSeville · 23/12/2022 21:54

Ooh, I never thought of Yorkshire puds, although I would recommend that you don't try to make crumble in it unless you have a version where you can turn down the fan speed, should one exist, as I can report that the air blows off most of the crumble topping.

@userxx We have a cheapy one from Costco, but it seems perfectively serviceable for cooking for 1/2 people.

Similar to this one, although I thought the capacity was a little smaller, perhaps not. It's slightly cheaper in the shop, about £48 I think.

I love my air fryer - barely use the oven now. Am looking at this thread for new ideas.

WorriedMillie · 23/12/2022 22:02

I want one, so I can cook vegetables in tempura batter like my dearly departed dad used to deep fry for me 😍

MotherWol · 24/12/2022 09:30

@WorriedMillie M&S have frozen tempura vegetables in the party food section and they come out lovely in the AF!

ODFOx · 24/12/2022 09:39

Came to say baked Camembert but I see you've beaten me to it! So good !
