I need ideas, my brain seems to have stopped working and just can't think of anything nice

We always have soup and a fish course before the main meal then pudding. My family always did this growing up and so did DH so we have carried on with the tradition.

FrenchBoule · 22/12/2022 23:54

@AkoraEdelherb what’s in Russian salad?

@AkoraEdelherb what’s in Russian salad?

We make it with diced boiled potatoes, carrots and celery mainly (very small pieces), tinned peas, lots of mayo until it’s not loose anymore. Consistency ends up being thicker than coleslaw. My mum then decorates it with black olives and thinly chopped red pepper.

🍾
We don't bother with a starter as we love Christmas Dinner and eat more of the main meal.

Boshi · 23/12/2022 00:08

Xmas is all about the food for me so yes we fit in canapés/starters

this year we’ll do a cheese graze board with fruits and olives etc

before mains a selection of salmon blinis, mini salmon en croute and prawn tempura

mains at 4/5 then pudding and everyone will probably have another plate of mains around 9. Can’t wait for Xmas now! 😋

thaegumathteth · 23/12/2022 00:11

We don't have a starter. Never have really not because we are small eaters but just cos we've never done it. Don't tend to get a starter when we go out for a meal either.

UWhatNow · 23/12/2022 00:11

I’m with Nigella - starters for Christmas dinner are madness. Why would you?

Annoyedfood · 23/12/2022 00:13

Traditionally smoked salmon mousse with prawns or melon with port.

We’ve decided not to have starters this year though as we want to enjoy the main meal more. It worked well last year!

TheWelshTart · 23/12/2022 00:13

Coquille St Jacques - bought.

Blossomtoes · 23/12/2022 00:15

Nothing. The food coma after two courses is unbearable.

jackstini · 23/12/2022 00:16

Prosecco

Anything else and won't fit in Christmas dinner abs pudding!

Lollypop701 · 23/12/2022 00:16

Aldi lobster tails …. But I’d happily have 2 starters and a smaller Christmas dinner …No pudding

NotToBeOrToBe · 23/12/2022 00:32

We proper spread out our Christmas day meal

Starter at 12 (soup, patè, tomatoes with Mozzarella)

Mains at 4

Puddings at 6

Cheese board at 9

Starters are for people who don't make enough roasties.

Fully agree.

Fizz. Then full-on mains. Job done.

OlleOskiFelle · 23/12/2022 00:52

Prawn cocktail.

junipermarten · 23/12/2022 00:58

Last year was the first we didn't have a starter and it worked out well so we're doing the same this year. More room for the yummy main meal (and the 3 desserts...).

CallieQ · 23/12/2022 01:02

No starters... dinner is enough!

Namaste6 · 23/12/2022 01:08

No starters. Will serve canapés with the bubbles but that's it. We have a large main course offering (Turkey, ham, salmon, nut roast, meat loaf, mushroom wellington) and all the trimmings.

FrenchBoule · 23/12/2022 13:25

@AkoraEdelherb I make the same one!
Can’t be bothered with potatoes so cooked carrots, boiled eggs, tinned sweetcorn and peas, celery, apple and fermented cucumbers. Mayo and mustard to finish off. Everybody loves it (bar my picky kids and DH)!

AmazonianAvatar · 23/12/2022 15:39

Mussels in white wine sauce for DH and oldest DC, which she will be doing. The other 3 DC don't like seafood, pate etc and will be inhaling choc all day, and I want room for lots of my special cauli cheese, brussel sprouts with chestnuts and roasties so will pass.

Margo34 · 23/12/2022 15:40

The only choice surely has to be prawn cocktail! 🤭

SirMingeALot · 23/12/2022 15:56

We don't, it interferes with our ability to mainline roast potatoes.
