Cat scratched my DDs face and I can’t stop worrying

I’m normally a pretty relaxed and rational person but I really need some perspective as I’m totally catastrophising over an incident with my DD.

DD is 13 and 2 weeks ago got scratched under the eye by our very old and normally placid cat (cat is 14). I say scratch but it was quite deep. It happened at night, our Urhent Treatment Centre was shut and A&E 7 hours wait. Rang 111 who said wash and clean it which I obviously did. Put antiseptic cream in it and then as scab formed put Vaseline on the wound.

It does look much better but still not great, it is still red and lumpy. Sometimes I think it’s healing well but just now seen it and think it looks awful still.

I have been watching YouTube videos by a woman who had a similar cut and she said it took 4 months to heal although the redness seemed to have gone by 2 weeks.

Im so worried and i honestly feel it’s ruined Christmas . My poor DDs face. I keep telling myself it’s only been 2 weeks and it needs time but then I find myself scrolling through social media videos where people faces have healed much quicker!

Sorry about the long link

I cut myself really badly twice on rusty wire etc, both times I really should have gone to hospital to get it washed put and stitches but for various reasons it wasn't an option. this stuff was amazing at speeding up the healing and stopping any infection

Then once its healed use bio oil

Pixiedust1234 · 22/12/2022 14:34

Go ask a pharmacist as they might be able to suggest something. Otherwise do you have econsult with your GP as you can attach pictures, so you won't need an appointment (which won't happen this side of next year).

In the meantime keep bathing with saltwater.

Valid8me · 22/12/2022 14:45

Seriously, a scratch on your daughters face has not ruined Christmas! I thought you were going to say that she was a baby or something, but she's 13 - she will be fine.

It sounds like it's healing well. You are being a bit dramatic

Alotworried · 22/12/2022 14:51

Yes I know I’m being dramatic, if it was my face I wouldn’t really care or if it was on any other part of her body I wouldn’t be worrying. It’s because it’s her face.

My cat scratched me the other day I wiped it with hibiscrub kept it clean you can hardly tell now and I'm a slow healer!

Does she have health issues? Is it an outdoor cat? Is it hot to the touch?

Alotworried · 22/12/2022 15:02

It’s more of a deep cut than a scratch. I thought it would have healed more by now. I’m pretty sure it’s not infected, just doesn’t seem to be fading after 2 weeks.

CatNutsRoastingByAnOpenFire · 22/12/2022 15:32

It won't heal with Vaseline on it, grease will keep moisture in.

Smartiepants79 · 22/12/2022 15:35

Why would you put Vaseline on it??
if you don’t think it’s infected then just leave it alone to do it’s thing.
And I really hope you’re not going on and on about it in front of your Dd you will give her a complex!

Alotworried · 22/12/2022 15:38

In front of DD I just say I thinking it’s healing well but it will take time. A NHS dermatologist I saw for myself after having a mole removed said Vaseline is the best thing on wounds to help them heal.

Here is your problem

I have been watching YouTube videos

Step away from YouTube and Google and go and see a pharmacist

LemonSwan · 22/12/2022 15:41

Hydrocolliod plasters!

Savlon good for remoisturising after airing and antibacterial.

Vaseline absolute no no.

I say that was someone who worked gardens and scratched nastily many a time.

Under the eye though I wouldn’t mess about. Get her to be seen urgently.

yellowsmileyface · 22/12/2022 16:04

It’s because it’s her face.

Why is that such an important factor? This comes across a bit vain.

Your daughter will be fine. A bit OTT to say Christmas is ruined.

If you're really worried, go and consult a pharmacist, but stop fixating on it.

Lochjeda · 22/12/2022 16:06

A cut on someone's face has not ruined Xmas, you need to get a bit of perspective here and maybe put a call in to your doctor when you can about anxiety. Take her to the pharmacist and get it checked.

Alotworried · 22/12/2022 16:17

Yes I agree, I do need to sort my anxiety out. I’ve been researching laser treatment and scar revision extensively and I feel exhausted with it all.

I've had some quite bad cat scratches over the years, I can either not find the scars now or for one particularly bad one I have to really really look closely

Give it some time before you panic about scarring

Don’t do this.
Let us heal completely before you start fussing with it. I think a plastic surgeon would say you were nuts to be considering this.

It’ll likely just heal and slowly fade, there may be a white line- it’ll go. Apply sunscreen in the unlikely event it’s there by summer.

I hope you aren’t passing your anxiety to your DD. Looks and image are already all consuming, please don’t let her see you obsessing. It’s a scratch in a sensitive place- give it time.

There are gels and plasters you can get to reduce scars, along with bio oil- don’t use these yet!

FooFighter99 · 22/12/2022 16:30

DSD had a small, deep cut under her eye after teasing our dog and he caught her with his tooth (100% her fault!)

It healed completely in a few weeks, and has left the faintest of scars (and I mean you can hardly see a mark)

STOP worrying, she'll be fine

Make sure she isn't messing with it

Aredhel · 04/03/2023 16:25

@Alotworried how is your son doing now? Did it end up healing well?

Alotworried · 04/03/2023 16:49

Well

OP posts:
Alotworried · 04/03/2023 16:52

Well it’s been 3 months and the scar is still there. Not as red but still looks like a scratch on her face. I’m just hoping it will keep fading as I’m told 3 months is not a long time in the world of scars, apparently it can take one year for a scar to mature.

I just tell DD it just needs time. She is applying silicone gel to the scar twice a day which I’ve read is meant to help. Hopefully this time next year it will be a distant memory!

@Alotworried I hope so too!
