Cheese for timid palettes

I’m in charge of the cheese board. I’ll eat anything and enjoy strong flavours and interesting cheese. Unfortunately the other five guests don’t.

Only one other likes Stilton ( no other blue cheese) and a couple can just about do a creamy mild Brie. They all like Baby Bels and I’ve been asked for Port Salut😞.
Any suggestions for less dull cheese just to make it a bit special for Christmas please.

Morbier is pretty tame.
Agree with Cornish Yarg as well.

AtomicRitual · 21/12/2022 22:02

I'm not a massive cheese connoisseur and only normally like "mild" or creamy cheeses so I'd love cheddar, Edam, Camembert and Brie.

PineapplePear · 21/12/2022 22:04

Wooky cave cheddar
Lincolnshire poacher
Manchego

QueenofLouisiana · 21/12/2022 22:04

Rutland red- like Red Leicester but slightly less tangy, smoother. Would add a bit of colour.

Theredfoxfliesatmidnight · 21/12/2022 22:05

Blacksticks blue is an "entry level" blue cheese. I don't like Stilton but do enjoy that. It's a great blue cheese for people that don't like blue cheese; m and s do it I think.

SquigglePigs · 21/12/2022 22:06

A gentle brie, a creamy Lancashire, a red Leicester, maybe an Edam (close to a babybel but a proper cheese at least), a Cheshire/Wensleydale/White Stilton for something with a bit of an edge but not too challenging. Maybe a Boursin for some flavour? or a fruity Wensleydale?

BahHumbug2022 · 21/12/2022 22:07

@edwin Thank you. I was looking for cheese they wouldn’t buy normally.

Emmental is on the list then. Thanks everyone else.

White Stilton is a good shout - lots of people dislike the idea of blue cheese

BahHumbug2022 · 21/12/2022 22:23

What does white Stilton taste like out of interest?

CatherinedeBourgh · 21/12/2022 22:29

ossau iraty
Brillat savarin/delice de bourgogne (some are very mild)

SarahAndQuack · 21/12/2022 22:29

I like Port Salut - it was an absolute godsend when DP was pregnant and we wanted squishy cheese.

I would go for a grainy chedday with those lovely salty crystals, and I agree about Manchego.

But ... come on, be nice. Christmas isn't the time to force people to eat something they don't like. Be the bigger person. Buy some nice approachable mild Brie and some babybels. It won't kill you. You can always buy something delicious just for you.

SallyWD · 21/12/2022 22:31

Everyone likes Boursin! Even my cheese hating DH.

FurAndFeathers · 21/12/2022 22:33

It’s a mild Stilton flavour, light and fresh - perhaps closer to feta

that, a nice creamy Lancashire, a mature cheddar, a Brie, and a garlic/herb roule

AliceS1994 · 21/12/2022 22:35

Boursain or a fancy looking roule that's just posh cream cheese with herbs? Aldi do a truffle brie which is lush and slight different flavour

NewToWoo · 21/12/2022 22:35

Boursin or roulé
Port Salut
Emmental or gruyère
Good Red Leicester
Good Caerphilly is delicious and very mild
Cornish quartz cheddar
Gouda

Itisbetter · 21/12/2022 22:37

“Dressed” mozzarella (get large ones and then sprinkle with olive oil, lemon zest, Maldonado salt, cracked pepper and herbs)

dudsville · 21/12/2022 22:37

Be sure to also get the things you know they like, but also get yourself some things you'll enjoy. Everyone can be happy.

Augend23 · 21/12/2022 22:39

Can you buy some really fab cheddar? I like the whisky infused Snowdonia cheddar but it's not in that many cheese shops.

Then I would wonder about Capricorn goats cheese? Very mild but utterly delicious.

Baron bigod is an excellent brie-esque cheese from East Anglia. I don't know if it could be described as very mild though.

Honestly I would probably just accept doing 1.5 cheese boards with a couple of delicious things like a picos de Europa blue, and then another cheese board with the mild stuff.

Tr1skel1on · 21/12/2022 22:49

Another vote for Cornish Yarg, it's a delicious cheese for you but mild enough for your guests. Personally I'd avoid Brie, I really dislike it if it's too strong.

For all the cheese lovers out there I've just been gifted a load of Scottish cheese. The Scottish Deli do a Hebridean blue that is out of this world if you like a proper stilton. The Strathdon blue is more chilled and my personal favourite. They have an amazing Brie according to DH, bit strong for me. The cheddar is a thing of beauty, I'd like to do a review of the Mull smoked cheese but my teenagers have eaten all of it! Highlight of my Christmas

ClandestineAdulation · 21/12/2022 22:53

Castello creamy blue is lovely, not too strong and I have taken to taleggio, would recommend!

Cookerhood · 21/12/2022 23:00

Ossau iraty
I need to try Cornish Yarg!

DreamingOfAGreenChristmas · 21/12/2022 23:01

Something really creamy, Vignotte is gorgeous. Chaource ?

Reblochon

Taleggio

Something lovely and nutty: Comté . Manchego.
