There is no sound in space.... and other amazing things you've learned as an adult!

Although I'm quite bright i was a complete drop-out at school.
Therefore facts and knowledge that some people know easily completely amaze me!

Last year I had to really research 'how humans hear' and sound being carried on vibrations was a revelation!

Recently I added 'there is nothing to vibrate off in the solar system, therefore space is completely silent 😲😲😲' to my repertoire.

What have you learned as an adult that has blown your mind (or is it just me?!!).

The chocolate bit inside a KitKat is made up of other rejected KitKats which have been smashed up.

How did they make the first KitKat?

This is now preoccupying me too.

The T-Rex is closer in time to the iPhone than it is to the Stegosaurus.

Cleopatra is nearer in time to Elvis than the building of the pyramids. Apparently (because I haven't checked that).

Pish, someone's already done that one.

The faster you go, the slower you age. If you took two twins, chucked one in a space ship and shot him off to the next nearest solar system and back again at close to lightspeed, You keep the other one on earth and by the time astronaut twin comes back, earth bound twin would be about 10 years older than him.

Its also possible to see the same event twice. Large amount of gravity makes light bend, which means it's possible to see the same star twice in different parts of the sky. The light that took the longer route past the black hole or whatever, took longer to reach us, so is older. Meaning that it's possible to see a star go supernova, and then see it happen again a short time later in another part of the night sky.

Siberia is so big it is approx 9 percent of all landmass on Earth.
The word Arctic comes from the Greek word arktos meaning " bear". Antarctica means " without bears" hence, no polar bears.
The " inventor" of modern computer programming was Lady Ada Lovelace, the daughter of the poet Lord Bryron. She was a mathamatician who worked with Charles Babbage on the logic machine( considered the first computer). She stated the machine could perform simple tasks if instructed by lines of mathamatical equations.

That there is a direct connection between Paisley the town and Paisley pattern fabric.

I lived about 15 minutes drive from Paisley, and drove past its weaving mills regularly for several years before the penny dropped.

Cashew nuts grow on apples!

Cashew plants grow a false fruit which is called a cashew apple and the real fruit, the cashew is attached to that. So not like a normal apple.

All grapes are clones.

I don't think this is strictly true, either. It sounds like a lot, if not all, of the grape plants that are grown commercially are cloned plants, in that they are grafts of existing plants onto new stock.

Not me but DH recently....the sun and the moon are not the same planet/star/whatever the correct technical term is. He genuinely thought the moon was basically the sun in night time mode!

But what did he think when they are both in the sky at the same time?? That he was pissed?!

Evolution: somehow when it was said humans descended from apes, I imagined we descended from chimps and that chimps stayed the same throughout and we branched off from them. But no, we have a common ape ancestor from whom chimps and humans have descended and evolved from. The ancestor would seem more ape like to us, more human like to the chimps. I'm not sure I'm explaining it well but my mind was blown. My teenage son looked at me like I was an idiot!

Can't believe kit Kats are basically cannibals. Isn't this how BSE started?

(Moon is 38 million km squared, Asia is 45 million km squared, Africa is 30 million km squared)

They have back teeth in both jaws. Same as sheep.

That those fluffy things you find by dandelions are actually dandelions in a later phase. I found this out a few years ago. I really thought they were a different type of weed.

It's quite interesting to watch a dandelion progress from flower to clock stage. The flower closes, then the stalk grows a lot longer, until it reopens. There was one by my back door where I smoke cigarettes and I followed its progress over several days.

In 5 billion years the sun will have used up all of its hydrogen and will turn into a red giant star.
It will expand beyond the orbit of our earth. There will be no evidence that the earth ever existed.
Whatever beings are living on the earth at that time will be as different from us as we are to the dinosaurs.

@BlackAmericanoNoSugar and they do so at a frequency we’ll respond to, not dissimilar from
a baby’s cry. I’ve been known to mistake my cat meowing for the baby crying; she’s learnt to cry at the same pitch!

Apparently a smart phone has more computing power than Apollo 11 when it landed a man on the moon.

This fascinates me!
