What are the big rolls of vinyl type stuff at bargain shops?

We have lots of discount/bargain shops near us which sell a multitude of things and have frequently come up trumps when I can't find something elsewhere

They have these big rolls of plastic type stuff usually outside with different patterns on it. Does anyone know what this is for?

The reason I ask is I'm wondering if it can go on the floor temporarily for Xmas? We're eating in the only room big enough which has new wood floors that annoyingly scratch easily, I was thinking of buying some of it to go under the table and chairs to stop scuffs and chair gouges but not sure it'll be robust enough?

do you mean the tablecloth stuff? It would be slippery and dangerous IMO

ShaunaTheSheep · 21/12/2022 10:26

The patterned stuff is table covering.

How about the self adhesive felt pads to stick on the bottoms of the chair legs?

ShaunaTheSheep · 21/12/2022 10:27

Or do you have a large rug that can be moved from another room temporarily?

CraneBoysMysteries · 21/12/2022 10:32

Ahh table cloth covering makes sense! Of course 🙊

I've already got felt pads on things but we're borrowing furniture so can't really stick it to the stuff we're borrowing

It doesn't need to be thick and foamy, just enough of a layer to give a bit of protection

We do have one rug but it's full of big loops and threads and any food in it would be a nightmare to clean

I might see if I can find a really cheap on somewhere...in 3 days! 😬

Felt pads, remove after from borrowed furniture.

If you were literally just putting it under the table and a foot or so around the edges then that would probably be ok as long as everyone is careful not to slip.

Most building supply stores will sell self-adhesive hard floor coverings for painting and decorating e.g.https://www.wickes.co.uk/Bond-It-Self-Adhesive-Protection-Sheet-for-Glass%2C-Resilient+Hard-Floor-Surfaces-25m-x-600mm/p/262366

Something like that might work

ChazsBrilliantAttitude · 21/12/2022 11:39

B and Q have some heavy duty paper rolls that you could tape in place with masking tape. It's in the dust sheets section of painting and decorating

If the floors are new and scratch easily they'll get ruined quickly anyway if left as is so I'd have thought you may as well just get a rug that you actually like. Dunelm or Argos can be click and collected the same day usually.

Paying to replace a floor only to cover it with something that looks rubbish doesn't make much sense (to me anyway!) and will protect the area long term and ask guests if they mind taking shoes off.

Are you sure it’s not actual floor vinyl? B&M by me has loads of the stuff.

Oblomov22 · 21/12/2022 12:08

I love it. Got it everywhere. Garden table, Christmas table, caravan table. Love it!

You could put down the stuff, tube yiu roll out, plastic thick sheet, that decorators use, on the floor. It's fabulous.

Ohhh you lot are lovely, thanks so much for the ideas and suggestions

A large rug is a good idea for sure....

The person we're borrowing from is a bit fussy so I wouldn't want to leave any sticky marks on her furniture but might get some as back up!

The group is a mix of 11 months-15years kids and wobbly grandparents too so I don't want anyone to slip.

Will look through the suggestions now xx
